Long-term Care Quality

Grade: A

On top of being a quality facility overall, this facility really excelled in our long-term care category, where it earned an impressive grade of A. Facilities that receive this type of grade in this category tend to provide consistent around the clock care to make sure patients are kept in good health. In addition to assessing the amount of care provided by aids and other staff, we also looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This nursing home provided the vaccine to 100 percent of its patients. Vaccines are vital to keeping patients out of the hospital. Clearly, this nursing home is doing something right in this area as it also excelled at keeping its residents out of the hospital. In fact, it had only 0.02 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.

Facility Inspections

Grade: A

This nursing home also performed well in our inspection category, which is based on the facility's inspection reports. We gave it an A for that area, which is one of our best scores. These inspection scores take several factors into consideration, including deficiencies, substantiated complaints and federal fines. You can learn more about each of these factors by reviewing copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: B-minus

This nursing home's next most favorable area is its short-term care grade, where it received a B-. Our short-term care grades are critical for prospective residents needing rehabilitation. Rehabilitation generally utilizes additional highly-skilled nursing. This includes a wide range of services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and occupational therapists, as well as other variations of therapy. Unfortunately, we were not able to track down information on registered nurse or physical therapy staffing for this nursing home. The final datapoint we considered in this area is the percentage of residents that eventually returned home from the facility. We found that just 5.9 percent of this nursing home's residents returned home. This figure was below the national average.

Nurse Quality

Grade: D

The last area we rated was nursing, turned out to be this nursing home's least impressive area. We awarded this nursing home a D in this category. This really was one of just a couple of weak links of an otherwise strong profile. Our nursing grade is primarily tied to the nursing home's level of nurse staffing. This facility provided just 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a very low total compared to most nursing homes. Finally, we also assessed some nursing quality measures in calculating our nursing ratings. This facility performed well in terms of minimizing its residents' major falls and pressure ulcers. We consider these data points to be reliable measures of the quality of nursing care.
