Facility Inspections

Grade: A-plus

To pair with a favorable overall score, we gave this place an A+ for our inspection category. Arguably the most critical factor we look at in calculating our inspection grades is deficiencies. Deficiencies are found on a nursing home's inspection reports. Places with better scores in this area most likely avoided the more severe deficiencies involving patient abuse or death. Although this facility had a few deficiencies on its government inspection report, none of them were serious based on CMS' scale. Keep in mind that deficiency-free inspection reports are uncommon in the industry.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: A-minus

Adding to its impressive assessments in other areas, we awarded this nursing home a score of A- for its short-term care score. With our short-term care assessment, we endeavor to forge a meaningful gauge for rehabilitation services. In this process, we look at a nursing home's levels of skilled nursing services, including both registered nurses and physical therapy, as well as respiratory therapy. Fortunately, it appear that this nursing home has registered nurses on staff. Not every facility employs these skilled professionals. On the other hand, according to the data they provided, it does not look like the facility employs physical therapists. Finally, we looked at the number of residents that ultimately returned home from this facility. We found that 5.7 percent of this facility's patients returned home.

Nurse Quality

Grade: B-plus

This facility received a very good nursing grade this year as well. It received one of our better scores in that category with a grade of B+. In computing our nursing scores, we factor in both staffing levels and the training levels of those nurses. This particular nursing home provided 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also assessed several nursing quality-based metrics and this nursing home excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any place South Carolina in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can often be avoided by providing better nursing care, such as having a system of turning a patient more often.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: B

The final area we graded was long-term care, where this facility was awarded a B. Believe it or not, this ended up being this nursing home's least impressive category. A facility could be doing a lot worse when it's poorest score still is better than most other nursing homes. Long-term care ratings of this caliber generally require both 24/7 care from nurses and aids, as well as quality routine medical care. In addition to considering the amount of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we also looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This facility gave the vaccine to 96.376816 percent of its residents. Vaccines are vital to keeping residents healthy. Clearly, this facility is doing something right in this area as it was able to keep its residents out of the hospital. It had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low number.
