While this facility's overall grade was as bad as it gets, it actually didn't perform terribly in the area of inspections. In fact, we awarded it a B- for that category, which is one of our better scores. We would argue that one of the most important factors in evaluating an inspection report is deficiencies. We especially focus on the severity of those deficiencies. Amazingly, this was one of the few nursing homes in the country that had no deficiencies whatsoever on its inspection report. This is very impressive. Not having any deficiencies is this nursing home's greatest strength.

Surprisingly, we gave this facility a grade of C for our short-term care grade, which is not a bad grade. Our short-term care ratings are presumably most meaningful for individuals in need of rehabilitation services. Rehabilitation generally mandates higher levels of highly-skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing includes not only nursing services, but also physical and occupational therapy, as well as other variations of therapy. One reason for this nursing home's strong score in this category is that it provides a substantially greater volume of physical therapist hours than a typical nursing home. Finally, we assessed the percentage of patients who were able to return to the community from this facility. We found that 40.5 percent of this facility's patients returned home. At most facilities, closer to half of their residents are able to return home so this is below average.

Another issue is the F this facility was given in the category of long-term care. For residents in need of a permanent place to live rather than rehabilitation, long-term care is a very important category. Once we assessed the amount of care provided by aids and other staff, we turned to the nursing home's vaccination record. This facility vaccinated 99.6732 percent of its residents for pneumonia, which is higher than the majority of nursing homes. Unfortunately, this nursing home's hospitalization rate was far less impressive. We found that this nursing home had 2.27 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a concerning rate.

The final area we analyzed is nursing, where this facility was given a very poor grade in this category also. We gave it an abysmal F in this category, which is obviously a major concern. We looked at the qualifications of nurses employed by the facility, as well as the number of hours the nurses worked with residents, in determining our grade in this category. This nursing home provides 3.1 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a much lower figure than we are used to seeing. To pair with its low totals in the area of nursing hours per resident, this facility also did not perform as well in the quality-based measures we looked at in computing our nursing ratings. We looked at the percentage of patients experiencing pressure ulcers and major falls. This facility had more pressure ulcers and falls than the average facility. This could be a bad sign when you consider that many bed sores and falls are preventable with better nursing care. These metrics hurt this nursing home's nursing grade significantly.

This is the percentage of residents that suffered from a urinary tract infection. Urinary tract infections are often associated with facilities with lower levels of hygiene. Closer supervision can minimize the number of UTI's sustained by residents in a nursing home. We want to point out that this metric is sometimes skewed by the fact that facilities have incongruent reporting standards for UTI's.
