Registered Staff Hours
Long-term Care Quality
This facility didn't perform quite as poorly in long-term care. In fact, we awarded it a grade of B- for that area. With our long-term care assessment, we weigh the volume of services provided by a facility, as well as a series of qualitative statistics. In addition to assessing the quantity of care provided by nurses and other staff, we looked at the number of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. Fortunately, this facility provided the vaccine to 99.64286 percent of its residents, which is a very respectable statistic. This nursing home was able to keep its residents out of the hospital. It had only 0.02 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.
Facility Inspections
Interestingly, this nursing home's terrible overall score can't really be attributed to its inspection reports. We awarded it a C for inspections. We believe that one of the most important factors in assessing an inspection report is deficiencies. In this regard, we especially look at the severity of the deficiencies. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Lastly, we need to point out that this nursing home has been assessed government fines in recent years. Fortunately these were on the lower end of the spectrum. That said, this still isn't what we like to find.

Short-term Care Quality
Turning to the area of short-term care, this facility was given just a D in that area. Our short-term care grade is generally employed to assess a nursing home's performance with rehabilitation To offer good rehabilitation services, facilities generally need to offer better levels of skilled nursing services. These types of services include registered nurses, physical therapists, respiratory therapists and other types of therapists. With its poor grade in this category, we weren't stunned to find that this place offers substantially fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per patient than most nursing homes. Finally, we looked at the percentage of patients who were able to return to the community from this facility. This definitely was not a strength for this nursing home. We found that just 5.2 percent of this nursing home's patients returned home. At most nursing homes, about half of their residents are able to return home so this is well below average.
Nurse Quality
The final category we analyzed was nursing. This facility was given an abysmal grade of F in that area. Our nursing grade assesses the facility's level of nurse staffing. We look at both the levels of training of the nurses as well as the number of hours spent with patients. This facility provided just 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a very low total compared to most nursing homes. To pair with its low totals in the area of nursing hours per resident, this place also didn't perform as well in the quality-based measures we looked at in determining our nursing scores. We looked at the percentage of patients sustaining pressure ulcers and major falls. This facility had more pressure ulcers and falls than the average nursing home. This may be a bad sign when you consider that many bed sores and falls are believed to be preventable with better nursing care. These scores pulled down this facility's nursing rating quite a bit.
