One of the many reasons this turned out to be a quality nursing home is that it received an A+ inspection grade. This is simply as good as it gets in this critical category. Inspection grades are tied to pieces of information found on the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes that receive favorable grades in this category have very few deficiencies on their reports. Most importantly, these places generally do not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with risks to patient safety. Although this place had a few deficiencies on its inspection report, none of them were severe based on CMS' deficiency scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

An additional reason we graded this facility so favorably is that it received an A+ long-term care score. This is simply as strong as it gets in this area. When facilities receive a grade in this range in long-term care it generally means it's well-staffed and is an overall good place to reside on a permanent basis. In addition to assessing the amount of care provided by nurses and other staff, we also looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This facility administered the vaccine to 100 percent of its patients, which is far higher than the majority of nursing homes. Finally, we looked at the nursing home's number of hospitalizations. Here we found that this place had 2.02 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days.

Another strong feature for this facility is that it received an impressive nursing grade. In that area, we awarded this facility a grade of B+. Our nursing grade analyzes the nursing home's nurse staffing levels. We weigh both the levels of skill of the nurses and the number of hours spent with patients. This particular nursing home provided 2.9 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also looked at several nursing quality measures and this place excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any place the country in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can frequently be prevented by offering better nursing care, such as having a policy of moving patients even once per day.

The last category we looked at was short-term care. In that category, we awarded this facility a favorable grade of B. Short-term care grades are vital for individuals needing rehabilitation. Rehabilitation generally utilizes more skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing includes a broad scope of nursing services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and respiratory therapists, as well as other types of therapy. This nursing home provides more services with physical therapists and registered nurses than most nursing homes we looked at. This is usually a favorable sign. Finally, we looked at the percentage of patients who were able to return to the community from this facility. We found that 39.6 percent of this facility's patients returned home.
