Facility Inspections

Grade: A-plus

One of the many reasons this place turned out to be a great nursing home is that it received an A+ in our inspections category. This is simply as good as it gets in this very important area. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in determining these inspection scores. One critical factor is health deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of these deficiencies is usually more important than the number of deficiencies, as some are quite minor. This nursing home received 4 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none were considered severe. This indicates that CMS didn't deem any of these deficiencies to be an immediate risk to patient health or safety. Keep in mind that deficiency-free inspection reports are rare in this industry.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: A

Contributing to its strong resume, this facility also received an excellent short-term care score, with a grade of A. In determining our short-term care scores, we size up the facility's levels of highly skilled nursing services, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists occupational therapists and other types of therapists. This score is typically a fair assessment of a nursing home's rehabilitation services. Fortunately, it appear that this facility employs registered nurses. Not every facility employs these types of nurses. However, based on the data they provided, they do not appear to employ physical therapists. Lastly, we looked at the percentage of residents who ultimately were able to return home from this nursing home. We found that 5.7 percent of this nursing home's patients were able to return home.

Nurse Quality

Grade: A

This facility also excelled in the area of nursing, where it received a grade of A. Few nursing homes performed better in this area. Our nursing rating assesses several components, many of which are based on quantities of nurse staffing. This facility provided 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also assessed several nursing quality-based metrics and this place excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any facility Minnesota in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can often be prevented by offering better nursing care, such as by having a policy of moving patients at least once a day.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: B

The last area we analyzed was long-term care, where this facility was given a B. Believe it or not, this turned out to be this nursing home's least impressive category. A facility could be doing a lot worse when it's weakest score still rates higher than most other nursing homes. Facilities that excel in this category tend to be well-staffed and offer extensive hands on care to residents. One of the criteria we considered after nursing hours was vaccinations. This nursing home provided the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its residents. This is a proven method to avoid unnecessary deaths for the aged 65 and up population. Lastly, this place was able to limit hospitalizations. It had only 0 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low number.
