Facility Inspections

Grade: A

The primary reason this ended up being a decent nursing home is that it earned an excellent inspection grade. In fact, its inspection grade was far superior to its overall grade. In our inspections category, we gave it an A. Our inspection grades are tied to datapoints located in the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes that excel in this category have very few deficiencies on their reports. Most importantly, these facilities generally do not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with risks to patient safety. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is always a good sign.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: A-minus

Another strength of this nursing home is its favorable grade in long-term care. We awarded them one of our best grades in that area, with a score of A-. Nursing homes that excel in this category typically provide patients with better supervision and stay on top of routine healthcare services. In addition to considering the amount of care provided by nurses and other staff, we analyzed the percentage of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This nursing home gave the vaccine to 100 percent of its residents. Vaccines are critical to keeping residents out of the hospital. The last statistic we looked at is the nursing home's hospitalization rate. Here we found that this place had 1.93 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is close to average in this area.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: F

This facility ended up receiving a an abysmal score in our short-term care category. It received a lowly F in this area. Our short-term care scores are based on a facility's quantity of highly-skilled nursing services. This means a wide range of services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and respiratory therapists, not to mention other types of therapy. Given its poor grade, we were not shocked to find that this nursing home provided substantially fewer registered nurse hours per resident than most other facilities. The final measure we assessed in this area is the number of residents who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We discovered that just 46.5 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home, which is well below average. The combination of these relatively poor statistics was damning for this facility's short-term care grade.

Nurse Quality

Grade: F

The last area we looked at is nursing. We gave it an F in this category, which is a very poor grade. This is obviously a significant disappointment. When determining our nursing ratings, we assess both the number of hours nurses spend with residents and the skill levels of the nurses. This place averaged a meager 2.8 hours of nursing care per resident each day. To pair with its low totals in the area of nursing hours per resident, this nursing home also didn't fare as well in the quality-based measures we looked at in determining our nursing ratings. We looked at the percentage of residents experiencing pressure ulcers and major falls. This place had more pressure ulcers and falls than the average facility.
