Facility Inspections

Grade: A

The main reason this ended up being a decent nursing home is that it earned an elite inspection score. Its inspection score was far better than its overall score. In the inspections category, we gave this facility an A. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in determining our inspection grades. One of those factors is deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of the deficiencies is usually more meaningful than the number of deficiencies, as some of these are relatively insignificant. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: A-minus

This facility also received high marks in the area of long-term care, with a strong grade of A- in this area. Long-term care ratings in this range generally require both around the clock care from nurses and aids, as well as quality routine medical care. On top of assessing the amount of care provided by aids and other staff, we also looked at the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This facility vaccinated 100 percent of its residents. Vaccines are vital to keeping patients out of the hospital. Clearly, this place is doing something right in this area as it was able to keep its patients out of the hospital. In fact, it had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: C

This facility was given its third most favorable category score in the category of short-term care. We awarded this nursing home a grade of C in this area, which is a respectable score. Our short-term care grade is typically used to measure a facility's performance with rehabilitation In order to have good rehabilitation services, nursing homes generally must provide higher levels of skilled nursing services. These types of services include registered nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists and other types of therapists. It doesn't appear that this nursing home submitted registered nurse or physical therapist staffing data. The final datapoint we considered in this area is the percentage of residents who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We discovered that just 5.1 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home, which is actually below average.

Nurse Quality

Grade: F

Switching gears to the last category, this nursing home really did not perform very well. Due to a bottom of the barrel grade of F in nursing, this was this nursing home's poorest category grade. In calculating a facility's nursing rating, we weigh the quantity of hours nurses are caring for residents as well as the skill levels of the nurses. This facility averaged only 0.2 hours of nursing care per patient on a daily basis. This is not a very impressive figure. To go along with its subpar totals in the area of nursing hours per patient, this place also didn't fare as well in the quality-based measures we looked at in determining our nursing ratings. We looked at the percent of patients sustaining major falls and pressure ulcers. This nursing home had more pressure ulcers and falls than the average facility. This may be a bad sign when you consider that many bed sores and falls are preventable with better nursing care. These statistics hurt this nursing home's nursing grade quite a bit.
