Facility Inspections
On top of being a great nursing home overall, it also received A+ government inspections recently. Its inspections are nearly perfect. Inspection grades weigh a host of factors included in a nursing home's inspection reports. One of the most important criteria we look at is the number and severity of deficiencies. Places with better scores in this category tend to have very few of these severe deficiencies. While this place had a few deficiencies on its inspection report, none were severe based on CMS' deficiency scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Short-term Care Quality
In addition, this nursing home was given strong marks in the category of short-term care. As a result, it was given one of our highest scores in that category with a score of A+. Short-term care grades are vital for people in need of rehabilitation. Rehabilitation usually mandates more skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing means a vast range of services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and speech therapists, as well as other types of therapy. One of this nursing home's strengths is registered nurse hours. We found that it offers more care from registered nurses to its residents than most facilities. The final measure we looked at in this category is the percentage of residents who were able to leave the nursing home and return home. It performed as well as just about any nursing home in Rhode Island in this area with 67.3 percent of its patients returning home.
Nurse Quality
Among its many impressive grades, this facility received an excellent nursing grade. In fact, we gave it a grade of A in that category. We weighed the licensure of nurses at the facility, in addition to the number of hours those nurses were with patients, in computing our rating in this area. This nursing home provides an impressive 3.5 hours of nursing care per patient on a daily basis. Of this total, more than one quarter of those hours were provided by registered nurses, which is one of the most highly trained levels of nurses. We add more weight to hours provided by skilled nurses in calculating our nursing scores. Lastly, we also assessed some nursing quality-based metrics in determining our nursing grades. This nursing home performed very well in terms of avoiding major falls and pressure ulcers. We consider these areas to be good indicators of the quality of nursing care.
Long-term Care Quality
In the final area, we awarded this facility a grade of A+ for its long-term care score. This completed a very favorable report card. When facilities receive this type of score in this category it is typically a good sign for patient care and indicates that the facility is well-staffed with nurses aids. On top of considering the amount of care provided by nurses and other staff, we also looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This nursing home gave the vaccine to 96.666664 percent of its residents. Vaccines are critical to keeping patients healthy. Lastly, this nursing home was able to limit hospitalizations. Indeed, it had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.
