On top of having a decent overall score, we also wanted to point out that this nursing home received favorable nursing marks this year. We gave them one of our better scores in that area, with a B+. This proved to be the facility's top grade. Nursing grades are based largely on quality and quantity of nursing care. This nursing home provides 3.5 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also looked at some quality-based measures in this category. This place fared well in some of the quality measures we assessed. For example, in terms of the number of its residents suffering from pressure ulcers, this nursing home performed better than the national average. This is generally an indicator that a facility has reliable quality controls in place. Pressure ulcers can many times be avoided with better nursing care.

This nursing home also was awarded a strong grade in our short-term care category. We gave this nursing home a better than average grade of B in this area. Our short-term care grades are probably more important for those requiring rehabilitation from their nursing home. Rehabilitation generally utilizes higher levels of highly-skilled nursing. This includes not only nursing services, but also physical and speech therapy, as well as other types of therapy. Fortunately, it looks like this facility has registered nurses on staff. Not all facilities employs these skilled professionals. However, according to the information they provided, it does not look like the facility employs physical therapists. The final item we looked at in this category is the percentage of patients that returned home from the facility. This place fared better than most nursing homes in this area with 52.8 percent of its residents returning home. At most nursing homes, fewer than half of their short-term residents are able to return home.

It should also be noted that this nursing home's inspection score was strong as well. In fact, we awarded it a B for its government inspection reports, which is one of our better scores. These inspection scores weigh several factors, including deficiencies and substantiated complaints. You can find more information about each of these items by reviewing copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. This place was hit with 3 deficiencies on its inspection report, but fortunately none were considered to be severe. This tells you that the inspectors did not consider any of these deficiencies to be an immediate risk to patient safety or health. The fact that the deficiencies were relatively minor leaves us less concerned with this inspection report.

Our final category is long-term care, in which we gave this facility a grade of B- in that category. In determining our long-term care grades, we size up the assistance with daily living received by the facility's residents. In addition to looking at the volume of care provided by aids and other staff, we looked at the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This facility administered the vaccine to 91.3486 percent of its residents. This is slightly less than we anticipated but still a decent percentage. The last datapoint we assessed was its hospitalization rate. Here we found that this facility had a relatively high 3.33 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. Neither its vaccination record nor its hospitalization rate were strengths for this place in this category.
