Facility Inspections
One of the reasons this place turned out to be a quality nursing home is that it earned an A+ inspection grade. This is as good as it gets in this critical category. Perhaps the most important factor we look at in calculating our inspection grades is deficiencies. These deficiencies are found on a facility's inspection reports. Nursing homes with higher scores in this category typically dodged the most severe deficiencies involving things like patient abuse. Although this facility had some deficiencies on its inspection report, none were major deficiencies based on CMS' scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Nurse Quality
In addition, this facility received high marks in the area of nursing. As a result, it received one of our highest grades in that category with a score of A+. Our nursing grade is mostly tied to the facility's level of nurse staffing. This place provided 6.6 hours of nursing care per patient on a daily basis, which is among the more impressive figures in the country. A significant portion of those hours were provided by registered nurses, which are one of the more skilled levels of nurses. We are really impressed by these statistics. On top of offering impressive levels of care, this place also excelled in several of the quality measures we looked at. With below 5 percent of its patients suffering from pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any facility the state in this category.
Long-term Care Quality
In the third area we assessed, this facility received high marks in the area of long-term care. For this reason, it was given one of our most impressive grades in that category with a grade of of A+. When facilities receive a score in this range in this category it typically means it's well-staffed and is a quality place to reside on a permanent basis. On top of considering the well above average level of care provided by aids and other staff at this facility, we also were impressed by the facility's record for vaccinations. This nursing home gave the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its residents, which is very impressive. This combination proved to be effective as this nursing home was able to keep its patients out of the hospital. In fact, it had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.
Short-term Care Quality
In the final area we assessed, this facility was awarded great scores in the category of short-term care also. Consequently, it was awarded an A+. This left it as one of just a few of facilities we gave A+'s in all four categories. In the category of short-term care, we try to qualify measures of a nursing home's rehabilitation services. We assess a nursing home's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses and physical and occupational therapists. This place is significantly above the national average in terms of its quantity of both physical therapy and registered nurse hours available to its patients. In fact, it provided approximately 50% more care per patient from both of these groups of skilled professionals than the average facility provided. Finally, we looked at the number of patients who were able to return home from this facility. We found that it outperformed the majority of nursing homes in this area with 49.8 percent of its residents returning home.
