Facility Inspections
We want to draw your attention to the fact that this facility outperformed its overall score in the area of inspections. In fact, it received a nearly flawless inspection report this year. As a result, we gave it one of our best scores in this category with an A. Arguably the most important factor we look at in determining our inspection grades is deficiencies. These deficiencies can be found on a facility's recent inspection reports. Facilities with better grades in this area typically avoided the more severe deficiencies involving health risks or even death. Fortunately, although this facility had some minor dings on its report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are those labeled as categories G through L. This means CMS didn't consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. A couple minor deficiencies shouldn't lead you to cross a nursing home off your list.
Short-term Care Quality
We also awarded this facility a favorable grade in short-term care. This nursing home received a B+ in this area, which is one of our better scores. Short-term care grades are often employed to gauge a facility's rehabilitation services. To offer good rehabilitation services, nursing homes generally must have better levels of highly skilled nursing. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, speech therapists and other highly trained professionals. Fortunately, this nursing home offers both physical therapists and registered nurses. Not all facilities offer both. The final metric we considered in this category is the percentage of patients who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. This place fared as well as just about any nursing home in Virginia in this area with 68.4 percent of its residents returning home. With most nursing homes, fewer than half of their short-stay residents are able to return home.
Nurse Quality
Turning to another strength for this facility, it also earned an elite nursing score. In fact, we gave this nursing home an D. Nursing scores are based largely on levels of nurse staffing. This nursing home averages 3.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day, which is below the national average. To pair with its subpar totals in the area of nursing hours per resident, this nursing home also did not fare as well in the quality-based measures we looked at in calculating our nursing scores. We looked at the percentage of residents sustaining major falls and pressure ulcers. This facility had more pressure ulcers and falls than the average nursing home. This may be a bad sign when you consider that many falls and bed sores are preventable with better nursing care. Unfortunately, these statistics hurt this facility's nursing grade quite a bit.
Long-term Care Quality
The final category we rated was long-term care, which proved to be this facility's least impressive area. We gave it an abysmal F in this area, which is certainly a major disappointment. Nursing homes that do not score well in long-term care often do not provide as much nursing care and also may be struggling in a few of the areas of routine healthcare services we looked at. After assessing the quantity of care provided by aids and other staff, we turned to the facility's vaccination record. This nursing home vaccinated 91.51292 percent of its residents for pneumonia, which is a few points below what we anticipated but still a reasonably acceptable figure. Surprisingly, this nursing home was actually decent at keeping its residents out of the hospital. Indeed, it had just 1.35 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days. This was its best feature in this category.
