Facility Inspections
Although we did not rate this nursing home highly overall, we want to draw your attention to its nearly flawless government inspections in recent years. We awarded them an A in this category. Perhaps the most critical factor we consider in calculating our inspection ratings is deficiencies. Deficiencies are found on a facility's recent inspection reports. It is typically in your best interest to avoid nursing homes that have a long list of deficiencies. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Despite this deficiency, this was still a relatively favorable inspection report.
Long-term Care Quality
This nursing home's second best category ended up being long-term care. In that category, we awarded this nursing home a grade of B-. In the category of long-term care, we focus more on the amount of services provided by a nursing home, rather than more healthcare-oriented services. In addition to considering the volume of care provided by nurses and other staff, we looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. Thankfully, this facility provided the vaccine to 100 percent of its patients, which is an above average figure. Unfortunately, this nursing home's hospitalization rate was less favorable. Here we found that this nursing home had 2.69 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days.
Short-term Care Quality
Moving on to the category of short-term care, this facility was given a grade of just D in this category. In the area of short-term care, we endeavor to qualify measures of a nursing home's rehabilitation services. We assess a nursing home's skilled nursing services, such as the ones performed by registered nurses and physical, occupational and other therapists. With a grade of this caliber for this area, we were not stunned to find this nursing home was well below average in two of the key staffing metrics we looked at. The facility offered far fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most facilities. Lastly, we assessed the number of residents who were able to return home from this facility. We found that it performed better in this area, with 50.8 percent of its residents returning home.
Nurse Quality
Turning to our fourth area, this nursing home did not fare well in this area either. With an abysmal grade of F in nursing, this is really as as uninspiring as it gets. Our nursing rating analyzes the nursing home's nurse staffing levels. We factor in both the levels of licensure of those nurses as well as the quantity of hours spent with residents. This nursing home averages 3.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day, which is below the national average. To pair with its low totals in the area of nursing hours per resident, this nursing home also did not fare as well in the quality-based measures we looked at in computing our nursing ratings. We looked at the percent of patients sustaining pressure ulcers and major falls. This facility had more falls and pressure ulcers than the average facility. This may be a bad sign when you consider that many bed sores and falls are believed to be preventable with better nursing care. These statistics hurt this nursing home's nursing grade significantly.
