Although we graded this facility extremely poorly overall, it earned a more respectable long-term care grade this year. We gave it a B- in that area. Our long-term care ratings are more important for individuals in need of more conventional services associated with personal care. This nursing home's vaccination data were a bit weaker than a few of the other statistics in this area, such as its nursing hours data. This facility administered the pneumonia vaccine to just 83.82353 percent of its patients. We would like to see some improvement in this area next year. Finally, we looked at the nursing home's number of hospitalizations. While it had 4.17 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, its risk adjusted score was more favorable.

Historical

Turning to the area of nursing care, this facility received a grade of just D in this category. Unfortunately, this ended up being one of its better grades. Our nursing score is largely tied to the nursing home's level of nurse staffing. Quantity of care does not appear to be the issue here, as this facility boasts an above average 7.6 hours of nursing care per patient per day. Also, roughly an hour of those were provided by registered nurses. Registered nurses are highly trained nurses. Despite being above average in terms of nursing hours, this nursing home had abysmal scores in some of the quality-based measures we looked at in computing our nursing scores. For starters, we looked at the percent of residents sustaining pressure ulcers. This facility was at more than double the national average in this statistic. This is quite alarming when you consider that many bed sores are believed to be preventable with better nursing care. This ended up sealing the facility's fate of receiving a very poor nursing grade.

This nursing home received a grade of just D in the area of inspections. Inspection ratings weigh a host of factors found on a nursing home's inspection report. Generally, you should be more cautious when considering a facility that has severe deficiencies on a recent inspection report. This nursing home had 3 deficiencies by government inspectors. The only favorable thing we found is that none of the deficiencies were in the categories that indicate that they created a threat to patient safety or health. Finally, this facility also received 2 substantiated complaints in recent years. This is yet another bad sign.

The last area we looked at was short-term care. Sadly, it received an F for this area, which is a bottom of the barrel grade. Our short-term care scores are thought to be more meaningful for individuals in need of rehabilitation from their nursing home. Rehabilitation usually mandates higher levels of skilled nursing services. This includes not merely nursing services, but also physical and respiratory therapy, as well as other types of therapy. Given its weak grade in this area, we weren't shocked to learn that this place offers substantially less physical therapy per resident than the average nursing home. Lastly, we assessed the percentage of residents who were able to return home from this nursing home. This facility didn't fare well in this area. In fact, we found that just 20.8 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home. This figure was quite a bit off the national average.
