Facility Inspections
While we were not high on this facility overall, we awarded it an A+ for our inspections rating. This score is significantly more impressive than the nursing home's overall score. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in calculating these inspection scores. One key factor is deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of deficiencies is arguably more meaningful than the number of deficiencies, as some of these end up being quite minor. Fortunately, although this facility had a few minor dings on its inspection report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones labeled as categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This means the government inspectors did not consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. A few minor deficiencies are not necessarily the end of the world.
Long-term Care Quality
We also awarded this nursing home a positive grade in long-term care. This nursing home received a B in this category, which turns out to be one of our more favorable grades. When nursing homes receive this type of score in long-term care it is a good sign for patient care and indicates that the place is well-staffed with nurses and aids. After we finished assessing the amount of care provided by nurses, we then analyzed the nursing home's vaccination record. This facility vaccinated 100 percent of its patients against pneumonia, which is an impressive figure. Pneumonia sadly can be a dangerous illness for nursing home patients so we prefer when a nursing home doesn't take any chances. The last datapoint we assessed is the facility's hospitalization rate. We found that this facility had 2.59 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days.
Short-term Care Quality
The next area we analyzed is short-term care. This facility's received a low-end short-term care grade where it was given a lowly F. In the area of short-term care, we endeavor to evaluate indicators of a nursing home's rehabilitation services. We analyze the nursing home's skilled nursing services, such as the ones performed by registered nurses and various therapists. As you might expect, we found that this facility provides significantly less physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than the average facility. Finally, we looked at the percentage of residents who were able to return to the community from this facility. This was not a strength for this nursing home. We found that just 30.6 percent of this facility's patients returned home. At most facilities, about half of their patients are able to return home so this is well below average.
Nurse Quality
The next category we scored is nursing, in which this facility was given a very poor score in this category as well. We gave it a lowly F for this category, which is definitely a major disappointment. Our nursing score considers numerous subcategories. The most heavily weighted factor is the amount of time nurses spend with residents. This facility averaged only 2.8 hours of nursing care per patient each day. This is an alarmingly low total. To go along with its subpar totals in the area of nursing hours per resident, this facility also did not perform as well in the quality-based measures we looked at in determining our nursing grades. We looked at the percent of residents sustaining major falls and pressure ulcers. This place had more pressure ulcers and falls than the average nursing home. This may be a bad sign when you consider that many bed sores and falls are preventable with better nursing care. Unfortunately, these statistics pulled down this facility's nursing rating significantly.
