Short-term Care Quality
Although we were not very high on this facility's overall score, it earned an A- for short-term care. Our short-term care scores are believed to be more meaningful for residents needing rehabilitation services. Rehabilitation typically mandates additional highly-skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing means not just nursing services, but also physical and respiratory therapy, as well as other variations of therapy. This nursing home employs both physical therapists and registered nurses. Not all facilities employ these skilled professionals. Finally, we looked at the percentage of patients who were able to return to the community from this nursing home, which as an area this facility performed much more favorably. It outperformed the vast majority of nursing homes with 69.8 percent of its residents returning home. This is a significantly higher rate than most facilities.
Nurse Quality
We also want to point out that this facility received a decent grade in our nursing category. We awarded it a grade of C in the area. Nursing scores are mostly based on a facility's level of nurse staffing. Based on the data, it looks like this place provides an impressive 4.4 hours per resident on a daily basis. This is more nursing care than most places provide. In determining our grades, we apply more weight to hours performed by more highly trained nurses such as registered or licensed nurses. Finally, this place was relatively weak in some of the major metrics we look at, with below average scores for minimizing its residents' major falls and pressure ulcers.
Facility Inspections
Unfortunately, with a grade of D in the inspection category, this facility performed relatively poorly in that area. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in determining these inspection scores. One of those factors is deficiencies. We recommend you pay close attention to the severity of those deficiencies. This nursing home was assessed one category J through K deficiency, which rank among the worst deficiencies. These categories mean that the government inspectors found a deficiency which places resident safety or health in immediate danger. Lastly, we need to draw your attention to the fact that this facility received large government fines recently totaling more than $100,000. This generally indicates that a facility's poor performance has been an issue for several years.
Long-term Care Quality
The final area we looked at was long-term care. This nursing home received a bottom of the barrel grade of F in that area. When nursing homes receive a score in this range in this category it typically means the nursing home did not perform well in our measures relating to resident care. One of the factors we considered in addition to nursing hours was vaccinations. This facility provided the pneumonia vaccination to 93.04813 percent of its patients. To our surprise, this facility was actually able to limit hospitalizations. With just 1.34 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, this nursing home has less hospitalizations than the average nursing home. This was its best feature in this category.
