Long-term Care Quality
In addition to receiving a great overall grade, this nursing home received an A+ in the area of long-term care. Facilities that excel in long-term care tend to be well-staffed and provide extensive hands on care to patients. On top of considering the volume of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we analyzed the number of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This facility provided the vaccine to 100 percent of its patients, which is significantly higher than most nursing homes. Clearly, this nursing home is doing something right in this area as it also excelled at keeping its residents out of the hospital. Indeed, it had only 0.04 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.
This facility also received an A+ inspection score, making it one of the rare places to receive multiple A+'s in our categories. This grade is based on the place's recent government inspections. Arguably the most important factor we look at in determining our inspection grades is deficiencies. These deficiencies are found on a nursing home's inspection reports. Places with better grades in this category most likely avoided the more severe deficiencies involving health risks or even death. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report, which is still very impressive. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Does this page answer your questions about Haven Nursing Center?
The next highest grade we gave this nursing home came in the category of nursing, where we gave it a grade of B-. This wasn't quite as good as some of its other scores, but a grade in this range is not the end of the world. Our nursing rating weighs several factors. The most important variable is the quantity of hours nurses spend with patients. This place provided just 0.4 hours of nursing care per patient each day. This is a relatively low total compared with most nursing homes. Finally, despite not having the most impressive total nursing hours, this facility actually performed admirably in the metric of preventing major falls. This is typically an indicator that a nursing home has quality controls in place.
Short-term Care Quality
The next area we assessed was short-term care, which turned out to be a weak spot for this facility. We gave this facility a grade of D in our short-term care category, making this its weakest category. We would still suggest that you look at the bigger picture. Our short-term care grade is commonly employed to score a facility's performance with rehabilitation. To offer highly scored rehabilitation services, nursing homes generally must have better levels of highly skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists and other licensed professionals. In this facility's case, we found that it provides fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than the average facility. Finally, we looked at the percentage of patients who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. We found that just 4 percent of this nursing home's residents returned home.
