Facility Inspections
While this facility's overall grade was decent, it really excelled in the area of inspections. In fact, we awarded it a grade of A for that category, which is one of our best scores. Inspection ratings are based on pieces of information found on the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Facilities that receive favorable grades in this area have very few deficiencies on their reports. Most importantly, these nursing homes should not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with risks to patient safety. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report, which is still very impressive. Remember that deficiency-free inspection reports are uncommon in this industry.
Long-term Care Quality
This facility also was given a positive grade in our long-term care category. We gave this nursing home an above average grade of B+ in this category. When facilities receive a grade in this range in this category it generally means it's well-staffed and is a quality place to live on a permanent basis. In addition to looking at the volume of care provided by aids and other staff, we analyzed the percentage of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This facility gave the vaccine to 100 percent of its patients, which is significantly higher than the vast majority of nursing homes. Finally, this place was able to limit hospitalizations. Indeed, it had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.

Nurse Quality
Next, we looked at the nursing category where we awarded this nursing home a grade of C, which is a decent grade. The nursing score analyzes quite a few datapoints, but the most important one is the number of nurse hours spent with patients. This place averages just 0.4 hours of nursing care per patient per day, which is a very low figure. Despite having low quantities of nursing care, this facility surprisingly excelled in some of the quality-based metrics we assessed. It performed well in terms of avoiding major falls and pressure ulcers. We consider these areas to be indicators of the quality of nursing care. In some cases, the quality of nursing care is just as important as the quantity of hours of care provided.
Short-term Care Quality
The final category we looked at was short-term care. Sadly, it received an abysmal F in this category, which is a very poor score. This is clearly a significant disappointment. Our short-term care scores are believed to be more important for folks needing rehabilitation from their nursing home. Rehabilitation usually mandates higher levels of highly-skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing includes not only nursing, but also physical and respiratory therapy, as well as other forms of therapy. In this nursing home's case, we found that it offers less registered nurse and physical therapist hours per resident than the average facility. Finally, we looked at the percentage of residents that ultimately returned home from this facility. This facility didn't fare well here either. In fact, we found that just 4 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home.
