Facility Inspections
Although this nursing home's overall score was as bad as it gets, it performed pretty well in the area of inspections. In fact, we awarded it a grade of B for that area, which is one of our better scores. Arguably the most important factor we look at in computing our inspection scores is deficiencies. These deficiencies are found on a facility's recent inspection reports. It is typically in your best interest to avoid places that have too many severe deficiencies. Fortunately, although this nursing home had some minor dings on its report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones labeled as categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This tells you CMS didn't deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. A couple minor deficiencies aren't necessarily the end of the world.
Short-term Care Quality
This facility also didn't perform terribly in the area of short-term care. Indeed, we gave it a grade of C for that category, which turned out to be another one of its better grades. With our short-term care assessment, we try to create a sound gauge for rehabilitation services. In this process, we look at the facility's scope of highly-skilled nursing services, including both registered nurses and physical therapy, as well as speech therapy. Unfortunately, we found that this nursing home provided fewer registered nurse and physical therapist hours per resident than most other nursing homes. The more important thing is determining what effect this had on quality of care. The final metric we assessed in this area is the number of residents who were able to leave the facility and return home. We discovered that just 0 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home, which is below average.

Nurse Quality
We also wanted to point out that this nursing home received an F for its nursing grade. The nursing score includes many subcategories. The most important variable is the quantity of hours nurses spent with patients. This facility provided just 0.2 hours of nursing care per resident on a daily basis. Finally, we also assessed some nursing quality-based metrics in calculating our nursing ratings. This place fared well in terms of avoiding pressure ulcers and major falls. We consider these metrics to be reliable measures of the quality of nursing care.
Long-term Care Quality
The final category we scored was long-term care, where this facility was given an abysmal score in this category also. It received an abysmal F for this area, which is obviously a major concern. For long-term care residents, the facility's primary objective is to keep patients healthy and safe. This is different than skilled nursing or short-term care where the goal is to rehabilitate residents. In addition to considering the amount of care provided by aids and other staff, we also looked at the number of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This facility vaccinated 100 percent of its patients, which is higher than most nursing homes. Surprisingly, this facility was able to keep its patients out of the hospital. It had just 0 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. Sadly, some of its other scores in this category weren't as favorable as these.
