Short-term Care Quality
In addition to receiving a strong overall grade, this facility also earned an elite short-term care grade. We awarded them one of our higher grades in that area, with an A-. In the area of short-term care, we attempt to qualify measures of a facility's rehabilitation. We assess a nursing home's skilled nursing services, such as the ones performed by registered nurses and various therapists. One reason for this facility's strong score in this category is that it provides more care with registered nurses to its residents than the average nursing home. The final metric we assessed in this area is the number of residents who were able to return home from the facility. This place fared better than most facilities in this area with 52.4 percent of its patients returning home. With most nursing homes, less than half of their short-stay residents are able to return home.
Facility Inspections
Adding to its impressive profile, this nursing home also performed well in the category of inspections. In fact, it received a nearly flawless government inspection report this year. As a result, it earned one of our highest grades in that category with an A-. Inspection scores weigh a host of factors found on a facility's inspection reports. One of the most important criteria we look at is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. Places with higher grades in this area tend to have very few of these severe deficiencies. Although this facility had a few deficiencies on its report, none of them were major deficiencies based on CMS' deficiency scale. The fact that none of the deficiencies were severe leaves us less concerned with this inspection report.
Nurse Quality
This facility received a very good nursing grade this year as well. It received one of our better scores in that category with a grade of B+. The nursing rating includes quite a few factors, however, the paramount one is the number of nurse hours per patient per week. This facility provided 4.2 hours of nursing care per resident each day, which is among the highest totals in the country. A significant percentage of those hours were provided by registered nurses, which are one of the most skilled levels of nurses. We are very impressed by these statistics. On top of looking at levels of nursing care, we also looked at a few quality measures in determining our nursing grades. These include minimizing residents' pressure ulcers and major falls. We view these areas as good measures of the caliber of nursing care offered, since better care tends to reduce these problems.
Long-term Care Quality
Switching gears to our fourth category, this facility received an acceptable long-term care grade. Although this was not as strong as some of its other scores, this is still not a major area of concern. In our long-term care category, we focus more on the quantity of services offered by a facility, along with a few quality metrics. One of the statistics we considered after this facility's very solid nursing hours is vaccines. This nursing home administered the pneumonia vaccine to 99.66443 percent of its residents. This is a reliable method to minimize unnecessary hospitalizations for the nursing home population. The last datapoint we looked at is the facility's hospitalization rate. Although it had 2.23 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, its risk adjusted score was not too bad.
