Nurse Quality
On top of being a quality nursing home overall, this nursing home really excelled in nursing, where it received an A. In computing our nursing scores, we analyze both staffing levels and the levels of licensure of those nurses. This facility provided 4.4 hours of nursing care per resident each day, which is among the highest figures in the country. A significant percentage of those hours were provided by registered nurses, which are one of the more skilled levels of nurses. We are really impressed by both of these statistics. On top of offering impressive levels of care, this place also excelled in several of the quality-based metrics we assessed. With less than five percent of its patients suffering from pressure ulcers, it fared as well as any place the nation in this category. This is often a good indicator that a place has reliable quality controls. Many pressure ulcers can be prevented by offering better nursing care and having a system of moving residents more often.
Long-term Care Quality
This nursing home was awarded impressive scores in the area of long-term care as well. In fact, we awarded it one of our most favorable grades in that area with a score of A-. Facilities that receive this kind of score in long-term care tend to provide consistent around the clock care to make sure patients are well cared for. On top of assessing the impressive quantity of care provided by nurses aids and other staff at this nursing home, we also were impressed by the nursing home's vaccination data. For example, this facility gave the pneumonia vaccine to 97.85714 percent of its patients, which is what we like to see. Finally, we looked at the nursing home's number of hospitalizations. We found that this facility had 2.4 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days.
Facility Inspections
Adding to its strong resume, this facility earned a grade of B for its inspections rating. This is a well above average score in this category. Perhaps the most significant factor we look at in computing our inspection scores is deficiencies. These deficiencies can be found on a facility's inspection reports. Nursing homes with better scores in this category typically avoided the more severe deficiencies involving things like patient abuse. Fortunately, although this nursing home had a few minor dings on its report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones labeled as categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This tells you the government inspectors did not consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. We should point out that deficiency-free inspections are uncommon in the industry.
Short-term Care Quality
The final area we scored is short-term care. We awarded this nursing home one of our higher grades in this area, with a B. This nursing home proved to be strong in all areas we analyzed. Short-term care grades are commonly employed to assess a facility's rehabilitation services. To provide highly scored rehabilitation services, nursing homes generally need to provide better levels of highly skilled nursing. These types of services include registered nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists and other licensed professionals. One of this nursing home's strength is that it offers more hours of care from registered nurses to its residents. Lastly, we looked at the percentage of residents who ultimately were able to return home from this facility. We found that 33.4 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home.
