Facility Inspections
The primary reason this ended up being a decent nursing home is that it earned an elite inspection score. In fact, its inspection grade was far superior to its overall score. In the inspections category, we gave this facility an A+. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in computing these inspection scores. One key factor is deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of these deficiencies is usually more meaningful than the quantity of deficiencies, as some can be quite insignificant. While this place had a few deficiencies on its inspection report, none were major deficiencies based on CMS' deficiency scale. We should point out that deficiency-free inspection reports are uncommon in this industry.
Long-term Care Quality
Another one of this nursing home's better category grades was in the category of long-term care. In that category, we awarded this nursing home a B. Nursing homes that do well in this category tend to be well-staffed and provide extensive hands on care to patients. On top of assessing the amount of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we also looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This facility administered the vaccine to 96.850395 percent of its patients, which is higher than most nursing homes. Clearly, this place is doing something right in this area as it was able to keep its residents out of the hospital. Indeed, it had only 0.02 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.

Nurse Quality
This facility's next best category grade came in the area of nursing. In that category, we gave this nursing home a grade of C. Our nursing rating includes a handful of subcategories, most of which are based on quantities of nurse staffing. This nursing home provides 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a much lower figure than we are used to seeing. Finally, our nursing grades also consider quality-based metrics, such as avoiding major falls. Despite not having the most impressive total nursing hours, this facility actually performed admirably in the metric of preventing major falls. This is usually a reliable indicator that a place has quality controls in place. Many falls can be avoided if a nursing home provides enough nurses aids to assist its patients.
Short-term Care Quality
Moving on to our final area, this facility did not fare well. Due to a very poor grade of F in short-term care, this was this nursing home's worst area. In determining our short-term care ratings, we analyze the nursing home's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses, respiratory therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. Our objective is to create a scale for sizing up the rehabilitation services of different nursing homes. Unfortunately, we found that this nursing home provided fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most other facilities. The last statistic we assessed in this area is the percentage of patients who who were able to eventually return home from the nursing home. This nursing home struggled quite a bit in this metric as well, with just 4 percent of its patients returning home. Unfortunately, this was well below average.
