Long-term Care Quality

Grade: A

One of the many reasons this proved to be a great nursing home is that it received a very impressive long-term care grade. This was its best grade. In this category, we awarded this facility an A. Nursing homes that receive this type of score in long-term care tend to provide consistent around the clock care to make sure patients are kept in good health. In addition to looking at the quantity of care provided by aids and other staff, we analyzed the percentage of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This facility gave the vaccine to 97.396965 percent of its patients. Vaccines are vital to keeping patients out of the hospital. Clearly, this place is doing something right in this area as it also excelled at keeping its patients out of the hospital. It had only 0.01 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.

Nurse Quality

Grade: A

We also wanted to emphasize the fact that this facility received an impressive grade of A in our nursing category. Our nursing grade is primarily based on a facility's level of nurse staffing. This particular nursing home provided 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also assessed several nursing quality-based metrics and this nursing home excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any place the country in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can often be prevented by providing better nursing care, such as employing a protocol of turning patients more frequently.

Facility Inspections

Grade: A-minus

We gave this nursing home an A- for our inspections rating. Arguably the most significant factor we consider in calculating our inspection grades is deficiencies. These deficiencies are found on a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Facilities with better scores in this category most likely avoided the most severe deficiencies involving patient abuse or death. Although this facility had a few deficiencies on its government inspection report, none were serious based on CMS' deficiency scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: B-plus

In the final category, we gave this facility a grade of A- for our short-term care score. This topped off a very favorable profile. In the area of short-term care, we seek to assess indicators of a facility's rehabilitation services. We analyze the nursing home's skilled nursing services, including the ones performed by registered nurses and physical therapists. Fortunately, it looks like this facility has registered nurses on staff. Not all nursing homes employs these types of nurses. On the other hand, according to the data this nursing home provided, they do not appear to employ physical therapists. The last measure we considered in this category is the number of residents who who were able to eventually return home from the facility. We found that 4.6 percent of this nursing home's patients returned home as opposed to remaining at the nursing home on a permanent basis.
