Facility Inspections
While we were fairly low on this facility overall, we awarded it an A+ for our inspections rating. This score is far more impressive than the facility's overall score. Our inspection grades account for a host of factors found on a nursing home's inspection report. One of the most important criteria we consider is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. You generally want to avoid nursing homes with a list of severe deficiencies flagged. This nursing home received 8 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none were considered severe. This means that the inspectors did not consider any of the deficiencies an imminent threat to resident safety or health. A couple minor deficiencies are not necessarily the end of the world.
Short-term Care Quality
One of this facility's more respectable category scores came in the area of short-term care. This ended up being its second best category. In that area, we gave this facility a C. Short-term care grades are generally used to gauge a facility's rehabilitation services. To provide highly scored rehabilitation services, facilities generally need to feature better levels of skilled nursing services. These types of services include registered nurses, physical therapists, speech therapists and other highly trained professionals. This nursing home employs both physical therapists and registered nurses. Not all facilities employ these skilled professionals. The final metric we assessed in this category is the number of patients that ultimately returned home from the facility. We found that just 40.7 percent of this nursing home's patients returned home.
Nurse Quality
This facility's next best category was nursing, but even there it received a grade of just D. This is still a well below average grade. We scrutinized the levels of nurses at the nursing home, in addition to the number of hours the nurses spent with residents, in computing our grade in this category. This nursing home offered a meager 2.6 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This statistic is far below the national average. On top of rating below average in nursing hours per resident, this facility also had poor marks in the quality-based metrics we looked at in determining our nursing ratings. We looked at the percent of patients experiencing major falls and pressure ulcers. This nursing home was at roughly 1.5 times the national average in both of these datapoints. This is likely a bad sign when you consider that many falls and bed sores are preventable with better nursing care. These scores helped pull down this facility's nursing rating quite a bit.
Long-term Care Quality
The next area we looked at was long-term care. It received an F for this category, which is a poor grade. Facilities that don't score well in long-term care often don't provide as much nursing care and also may be struggling in some of the areas of routine medical care we assessed. After assessing the amount of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we turned to the nursing home's vaccination records. This nursing home vaccinated 93.70629 percent of its patients against pneumonia, which happens to be a bit below what we anticipated but still a decent figure. Lastly, we looked at its number of hospitalizations. Here we found that this nursing home had 2.03 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. Unfortunately, this figure is also alarming.
