Short-term Care Quality

Grade: C

While we graded this nursing home incredibly poorly overall, it received a fairly respectable short-term care grade this year. We gave it a C in that area, which was the closest thing to a bright spot we can find for this facility. Short-term care grades are often employed to grade a facility's performance with rehabilitation. In order to provide highly graded rehabilitation services, nursing homes generally need to have better levels of skilled nursing. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists and other highly trained professionals. This nursing home provides more services with physical therapists and registered nurses than most nursing homes we looked at. This is usually a favorable sign. Finally, we considered the number of patients that ultimately were able to return home from this nursing home. We found that 4.5 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home. This figure was actually quite a bit below average.

Nurse Quality

Grade: C

This facility excelled in nursing, where it received a grade of C. Few places fared better in this category. Our nursing score is based on the nursing home's nurse staffing levels. We consider both the levels of skill of those nurses and the number of hours spent with patients. This nursing home provides 0.3 hours of nursing care per patient each day. This is a much lower figure than we were hoping for. Despite having low quantities of nursing care, this facility excelled in some of the quality-based metrics we looked at. It performed well in the area of avoiding pressure ulcers and major falls. Many consider these areas to be indicators of the quality of nursing care. In some cases, the quality of nursing care is every bit as important as the number of hours of care offered.

Facility Inspections

Grade: C

This facility really didn't perform horribly in the area of inspections. We gave them a grade of C for that category. Other categories turned out to be the source of this facility's rock bottom overall score. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in calculating our inspection scores. One of those factors is deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of these deficiencies is arguably more important than the quantity of deficiencies, as some end up being quite insignificant. This nursing home was assessed 4 deficiencies on its inspection report, but none were in category J, K or L. This indicates CMS didn't deem any of the deficiencies to put patient safety or health in immediate harm or jeopardy. Unfortunately, we also need to draw your attention to the fact that this facility received significant government fines in recent years.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: F

The final area we analyzed was long-term care. Unfortunately, we gave it a lowly F for this category, which is an abysmal grade. When nursing homes receive a score in this range in long-term care it generally means the nursing home did not perform well in our measures relating to patient care. In addition to considering the volume of care provided by nurses and other staff, we looked at the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. Candidly, we were a bit alarmed this nursing home provided the vaccine to only 90.30303 percent of its residents. Surprisingly, this nursing home was actually able to limit hospitalizations. With just 0.01 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, this facility had fewer hospitalizations than the average nursing home. This was its best score in this category.
