Registered Staff Hours
Short-term Care Quality
We also wanted to emphasize the fact that this facility received an impressive grade of A in our short-term care category. Short-term care grades are commonly employed to grade a facility's performance with rehabilitation. To provide highly rated rehabilitation services, facilities generally must feature better levels of skilled nursing services. These types of services include registered nurses, physical therapists, speech therapists and other highly trained professionals. Fortunately, it looks like this facility has registered nurses on staff. Not every nursing home employs these types of nurses. On the other hand, according to the data this nursing home provided, they do not appear to employ physical therapists. The last measure we looked at in this area is the percentage of residents that eventually returned home from the nursing home. We found that 6.1 percent of this nursing home's patients returned home as opposed to remaining at the nursing home on a permanent basis.
Nurse Quality
One of the other reasons we rated this facility so highly is that it received a very impressive nursing grade. In fact, nursing proved to be its second best category grade. In that category, we gave this nursing home an A. Our nursing grade assesses several components, many of which are based on nursing hours. This nursing home provides 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also looked at several nursing quality measures and this facility excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any facility Maryland in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can many times be prevented by providing better nursing care, such as by employing a protocol of moving a patient more frequently.

Long-term Care Quality
This facility received an impressive long-term care grade as well. We gave it one of our higher grades in that area with a grade of B+. For prospective patients seeking a permanent place to live as opposed to skilled nursing, long-term care is a very important category. Once we assessed the quantity of care provided by nurses and other staff, we next considered the nursing home's vaccination record. This facility vaccinated 90.79498 percent of its residents for pneumonia, which happens to be a few points lower than we expected but still a respectable percentage. Although its vaccination rate was a bit lower than we like to see, we were pleased to find facility was able to limit hospitalizations. It had only 0.02 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.
Facility Inspections
Turning to the last category we assessed, this nursing home received a good grade in inspections as well. We awarded it a score of B for that category. This nursing home didn't have any major weaknesses. Arguably the most important factor we look at in determining our inspection grades is deficiencies. Deficiencies are found on a facility's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes with higher grades in this category typically avoided the more severe deficiencies involving things like patient abuse. While this facility had some deficiencies on its government inspection report, none were major deficiencies based on CMS' deficiency scale. The fact that none of the deficiencies were severe made us feel better about this inspection report.
