Facility Inspections
Although we did not rate this nursing home highly overall, we want to draw your attention to its nearly flawless government inspections in recent years. We awarded them an impressive grade of A in this category. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in calculating our inspection grades. One of those factors is deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of deficiencies is arguably more important than the quantity of deficiencies, as some can be quite insignificant. Fortunately, although this place had some minor dings on its report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are labeled as categories G through L. This tells you the inspectors did not consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. A few minor deficiencies aren't necessarily the end of the world.
Long-term Care Quality
One of this facility's more favorable category grades was in the area of long-term care. This ended up being its second most favorable category. In that area, we gave this nursing home a B-. Long-term care scores are based on a nursing home's quantity of nursing services. This means a broad spectrum of personal care services, ranging from help with activities of daily living to routine healthcare services. In addition to assessing the volume of care provided by aids and other staff, we looked at the number of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This facility provided the vaccine to 100 percent of its patients, which is more than the vast majority of nursing homes. Finally, we looked at the nursing home's number of hospitalizations. Although it had 2.26 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, its risk adjusted statistic was not too far off the national average.
Nurse Quality
Turning to the area of nursing care, this facility received a grade of just D in this category. Our nursing grade includes a handful of datapoints, most of which are tied to nursing hours. This nursing home provides 2.8 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a much lower figure than we are used to seeing. Unfortunately, this place also had abysmal scores in some of the quality-based measures to pair with its weak nursing hours. We looked at the percentage of patients suffering pressure ulcers and we were disappointed. This facility was at roughly 1.5 times the national average in this metric. This is a bad sign in light of the fact that many pressure ulcers could be avoided with better nursing care. This statistic helped pull down this facility's nursing score quite a bit.
Short-term Care Quality
The next category we scored is short-term care. Sadly, it received an F in this category, which is a bottom of the barrel grade. Our short-term care scores are important for residents needing rehabilitation. Rehabilitation typically utilizes higher levels of skilled nursing. This includes a broad range of nursing services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and respiratory therapists, as well as other variations of therapy. Not surprisingly, we found that this nursing home provides far less physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than the average facility. Finally, we considered the number of residents who eventually returned home from this facility. This facility didn't fare well here either. In fact, we found that just 22.8 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home. This figure was well off the national average.
