Facility Inspections
While this nursing home's overall grade was as bad as it gets, it actually really excelled in the category of inspections. In fact, we awarded it a grade of A- for that category, which is one of our highest scores. Inspection scores weigh several factors, including deficiencies and substantiated complaints. You can find more information about each of these items by obtaining copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. In spite of this deficiency, this place still had a relatively favorable report.
Long-term Care Quality
We awarded this nursing home a grade of just D for our long-term care grade and that actually ended up being its next highest category. If you are seeking anything other than short-term rehabilitation, you should take a close look at each nursing home's long-term care ratings. After looking at the volume of care provided by aids and other staff, we next considered the facility's vaccination statistics. This facility vaccinated 98.181816 percent of its patients against pneumonia, which is more than most nursing homes. Surprisingly, this facility also fared well at keeping its residents out of the hospital. It had only 1.63 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. Sadly, a few of its other scores in the category weren't as favorable as these.
Short-term Care Quality
Unfortunately, this facility received an F for its short-term care score. In crafting our short-term care scores, we look at the nursing home's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses, respiratory therapists, physical therapists and other types of therapists. The purpose is to create a scale for comparing the rehabilitation services of different nursing homes. Based on its score in this category, we were not stunned to find that this place was well below average in terms of the quantity of physical therapy and registered nurse hours offered to its patients based on the measures we assessed. The final metric we assessed in this category is the percentage of patients who were able to leave the facility and return to the community. We discovered that just 42.4 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home, which is well below average. The combination of these subpar statistics sunk this facility's short-term care grade.
Nurse Quality
Switching gears to our last area, this nursing home didn't perform well here either. Due to a bottom of the barrel grade of F in nursing, this is just about as as uninspiring as it gets. Our nursing score is largely tied to a nursing home's nurse staffing. This facility provided just 2.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a very low total compared to most nursing homes. To go along with its low totals in the area of nursing hours per resident, this nursing home had bad scores in several of the quality-based metrics we looked at in computing our nursing ratings. We looked at the percent of patients sustaining falls which led to major injury. This facility was at more than 150 percent of the national average in this statistic. This is quite concerning in light of the fact that many falls could be avoided with better nursing care. This ended up sealing the nursing home's fate of receiving a poor nursing score.
