Registered Staff Hours
Nurse Quality
Although we were not high on this facility overall, we awarded it a B for our nursing rating. In computing our nursing ratings, we assess both nursing hours and the skill levels of the nurses. This nursing home provides 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also assessed several nursing quality measures and this nursing home excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any facility California in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can typically be avoided by offering better nursing care, such as by employing a system of moving a patient even once per day.
Long-term Care Quality
Another one of this facility's more impressive category scores was in the category of long-term care. In that category, we awarded this facility a grade of B. It actually outperformed most nursing homes in this area. When nursing homes receive a score in this range in this category it typically means it has plenty of staff and is a quality place to live on a permanent basis. After considering the volume of care provided by nurses and other staff, we then looked at the nursing home's vaccination statistics. This facility vaccinated 100 percent of its residents against pneumonia, which is higher than the average nursing home. Clearly, this place is doing something right in this area as it was able to keep its patients out of the hospital. In fact, it had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.

Facility Inspections
We were also surprised to award this facility a favorable government inspection score as well. We gave it a B- in this area. Inspection scores are tied to many items found on the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Deficiencies are a key thing to look for on these inspections. Severe deficiencies indicate a risk to resident safety. This nursing home was hit with 8 deficiencies on its inspection report, but fortunately none of the deficiencies were considered severe. This means that the government inspectors did not consider any of the deficiencies to be an imminent threat to resident health or safety. A few minor deficiencies are not necessarily the end of the world.
Short-term Care Quality
The last area we rated is short-term care. Unfortunately, we gave it an F in this area, which is a poor score. In determining our short-term care grades, we look at the nursing home's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses, speech therapists, physical therapists and other types of therapists. Our objective is to devise a scale for comparing the rehabilitation services of different nursing homes. With a score of this caliber for this area, we were not surprised to discover that this facility was below average in many staffing figures we focus on. It provided significantly fewer registered nurse and physical therapist hours per resident than most nursing homes. Lastly, we considered the number of patients who ultimately were able to return home from this facility. This nursing home didn't fare well here either. In fact, we found that just 4.1 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home.
