Facility Inspections
The main reason this facility received a decent overall score is its impeccable government inspections in recent years. We gave them one of our better scores in that area, with an A. This is a much better score than the facility's overall score, which was decent but certainly not elite. Inspection grades are tied to many items located in the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Facilities that receive favorable grades in this area have very few deficiencies on their reports. Most importantly, these facilities should not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with risks to patient safety. This nursing home was hit with 4 deficiencies on its inspection report, but fortunately none of the deficiencies were considered to be major deficiencies. This indicates that CMS didn't consider any of these deficiencies to cause an immediate risk to resident health or safety. We should note that deficiency-free inspection reports are uncommon in the industry.
Long-term Care Quality
In addition, we gave this nursing home a B in our long-term care category. This is one of our higher grades. Facilities that excel in long-term care typically provide patients with better supervision and stay on top of routine medical care. One of the factors we considered after nursing hours was vaccines. This facility provided the pneumonia vaccination to 100 percent of its patients. Vaccination is a proven method to avoid negative health outcomes for the elderly population. Finally, we looked at the facility's number of hospitalizations. Here we found that this nursing home had 3.38 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. While this admittedly wasn't as strong as some of its other scores in this category, this number may be skewed for some facilities based on the preexisting medical conditions of residents.
Nurse Quality
In addition, we awarded this nursing home a grade of B in our nursing category. This is one of our better grades. When determining a facility's nursing score, we look at the quantity of hours nurses are with patients as well as the levels of training of the nurses. This nursing home provides 3.6 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also looked at some quality-based measures in this category. This nursing home fared well in some of the quality measures we looked at. For example, in terms of the percentage of its patients suffering from pressure ulcers, this facility performed better than the national average. This is generally an indicator that a facility has reliable quality controls in place. Pressure ulcers can generally be prevented with better nursing care.
Short-term Care Quality
This nursing home's weakest category was short-term care, which is the final category we analyzed. In this category, we gave this nursing home a grade of just D. Our short-term care ratings are likely more critical for folks requiring rehabilitation from their nursing home. Rehabilitation usually requires additional highly-skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing includes not merely nursing, but also physical and respiratory therapy, as well as other variations of therapy. It appears that this nursing home was below average in two of the key staffing areas we assessed. The facility supplied fewer registered nurse and physical therapist hours per patient than most other facilities. Finally, we considered the percentage of patients who were able to return home from this nursing home. This facility didn't fare well here either. In fact, we found that just 28.5 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home.
