Facility Inspections
While we graded this nursing home incredibly poorly overall, it actually received an impressive government inspection report this year. As a result, it received one of our highest grades in that category with an A-. Inspection grades weigh a host of factors included in a nursing home's inspection reports. One key criteria we rely on is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. You generally want to avoid places with a list of severe deficiencies flagged. Although this nursing home had some deficiencies on its government inspection report, none were severe based on CMS' deficiency scale. A few minor deficiencies are not the end of the world.
Long-term Care Quality
As it turns out, this nursing home only received a D for its long-term care rating, which was actually one of its more favorable category grades. When nursing homes receive this type of score in long-term care it is a bad sign for patient care and it may mean that the place is not as well-staffed with nurses and aids. Once we looked at the quantity of care provided by aids and other staff, we turned to the nursing home's vaccination records. Unfortunately, this nursing home vaccinated just 65.346535 percent of its residents for pneumonia. To our surprise, this facility was actually decent at keeping its residents out of the hospital. In fact, it had just 0.02 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days. This is its best feature in this category.

Nurse Quality
Among this nursing home's several poor grades was its F in the area of nursing care. In computing a nursing home's nursing score, we assess the number of hours nurses spend with patients and the level of licensure of the nurses. This particular nursing home averaged a meager 0.3 hours of nursing care per patient per day. This figure is quite a bit below average. Finally, we also looked at some nursing quality-based metrics in computing our nursing scores. This place performed well in the area of avoiding pressure ulcers and major falls. We consider these metrics to be measures of the quality of nursing care.
Short-term Care Quality
Moving on to our fourth category, this facility really didn't fare well in this category either. Due to a poor grade of F in short-term care, this is just about as terrible as it gets. In computing these short-term care scores, we look at the facility's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. Our goal is to formulate a barometer for sizing up the rehabilitation services of different nursing homes. With its weak grade in this area, we were not shocked to discover this place provided substantially fewer registered nurse and physical therapist hours per resident than most facilities. The last statistic we considered in this category is the percentage of patients who ultimately returned home from the nursing home. This facility struggled quite a bit in this area as well, with just 4 percent of its residents returning home. Unfortunately, this was quite a bit below the national average.
