Facility Inspections
Although this place's overall grade was as bad as it gets, it actually fared pretty well in the category of inspections. In fact, we awarded it a B+ for that category, which is one of our better scores. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in determining these inspection grades. One key factor is health deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of these deficiencies is arguably more meaningful than the number of deficiencies, as some are relatively insignificant. While this place had some deficiencies on its government inspection report, none of them were major deficiencies based on CMS' deficiency scale. A few minor deficiencies aren't the end of the world.
Long-term Care Quality
Turning to the area of long-term care, this nursing home was given a grade of just D in that category. As it turns out, this wound up being one of its better grades. When nursing homes receive a score in this range in long-term care it generally means the facility did not perform well in our measures relating to patient care. On top of considering the volume of care provided by nurses and other staff, we looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. As it turns out, this nursing home administered the vaccine to only 66.82353 percent of its patients, which is several points lower than we expected. To our surprise, this nursing home actually fared well at keeping its residents out of the hospital. In fact, it had just 0.03 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. This was its best score in this category.

Short-term Care Quality
The third category we graded was short-term care. This nursing home's was given a low-end short-term care score where it was given an F. Our short-term care ratings are important for people needing rehabilitation. Rehabilitation generally utilizes more skilled nursing. This means a broad spectrum of nursing services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and speech therapists, as well as other forms of therapy. With a grade in this range in this area, we were not surprised to learn this facility was below average in the two key staffing metrics we focus on. It supplied substantially fewer registered nurse and physical therapist hours per patient than most other nursing homes. The last statistic we considered in this category is the percentage of patients that returned home from the nursing home. This facility struggled quite a bit in this metric as well, with just 4.6 percent of its residents returning home.
Nurse Quality
The next category we rated is nursing, where this facility received a very poor grade in this area as well. Sadly, it received an abysmal F for this category, which is definitely a major disappointment. The nursing grade considers a host of subcategories. The most important one is the number of hours nurses spend with patients. This particular nursing home offered just 0.3 hours of nursing care per patient each day. This statistic is well below the national average. To go along with its low totals in the area of nursing hours per resident, this nursing home also didn't perform as well in the quality-based measures we looked at in determining our nursing grades. We looked at the percentage of patients sustaining pressure ulcers and major falls. This facility had more falls and pressure ulcers than the average nursing home. This may be a bad sign when you consider that many falls and bed sores are preventable with better nursing care. Unfortunately, these statistics pulled down this facility's nursing rating quite a bit.
