Registered Staff Hours
Nurse Quality
While this facility's overall score was terrible, it actually didn't perform as badly in the area of nursing. In fact, we gave it a grade of B- for that area. We scrutinized the licensure of nurses at the facility, in addition to the number of hours those nurses spent with patients, in calculating our rating in this area. This nursing home provides 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a much lower figure than we are used to seeing. Finally, although this place got docked a bit for nursing hours, it actually excelled in a few of our quality metrics. With less than five percent of its patients suffering from pressure ulcers, it did remarkably well in this metric.
Short-term Care Quality
We were also stunned to learn that this facility earned a solid short-term care score this year. We awarded it a B- in that area. Short-term care grades are based in part on a facility's quantity of skilled skilled healthcare professionals. This means a wide spectrum of nursing services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and respiratory therapists, as well as other forms of therapy. In this facility's case, we were surprised to learn that it actually provides less registered nurse and physical therapist hours per patient than the average facility. The hope is that this does not adversely impact the quality of care. The last metric we considered in this category is the number of patients who returned home from the nursing home. We found that just 6 percent of this nursing home's patients returned home. Unfortunately, this was below the national average.

Facility Inspections
This nursing home really didn't perform terribly in the area of inspections. We gave it a grade of C for that category. These inspection ratings weigh several factors, including deficiencies and substantiated complaints. You can find more information about each of these issues by reviewing copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. This nursing home had 6 deficiencies on its government inspection report, but none were category G through L deficiencies. This tells you that this facility dodged the more serious classes of deficiencies. Finally, this facility was cited by CMS for possible abuse or neglect. We would not recommend this facility under any circumstance.
Long-term Care Quality
The last area we looked at is long-term care, is this facility's least impressive category. We awarded this facility a grade of D in that category. For patients looking for a permanent place to live rather than skilled nursing, long-term care grades are a key measure. In addition to looking at the amount of care provided by nurses and other staff, we also looked at the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. Fortunately, this facility vaccinated 100 percent of its patients, which is a very solid datapoint. Surprisingly, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. With only 0.03 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, this facility has less hospitalizations than many nursing homes. Unfortunately, a few of its other scores in the category weren't as favorable as these.
