Facility Inspections

Grade: A-minus

To go along with its relatively modest overall score, we awarded this facility an A- for our inspections rating. This is far better than the facility's overall grade. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in computing these inspection grades. One critical factor is health deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of these deficiencies is usually more important than the number of deficiencies, as some deficiencies can be relatively insignificant. While this facility had a few minor dings on its inspection report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones labeled as categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This means that the inspectors did not deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. A couple minor deficiencies shouldn't stop you from considering a nursing home.

Nurse Quality

Grade: B-minus

This nursing home performed well in the area of nursing. We awarded it a grade of B- for that category, which is one of our best grades. Our nursing score is largely tied to a nursing home's nurse staffing. This facility provides 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident on a daily basis. This is a much lower figure than we were hoping for. Despite having low quantities of nursing care, this facility actually fared better in some of the quality-based metrics we assessed. In fact, it scored well in terms of avoiding major falls and pressure ulcers. We consider these areas to be good indicators of the quality of nursing care. In many cases, the quality of nursing care is every bit as important as the number of hours of care offered.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: C

The third area we assessed is short-term care, where this nursing home was awarded a grade of C in this category. In the area of short-term care, we attempt to qualify indicators of a facility's rehabilitation. We assess the facility's skilled nursing services, including the ones performed by registered nurses and physical therapists. Unfortunately, we found that this nursing home provided fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most other facilities. The last metric we assessed in this area is the number of residents who were able to leave the facility and return to the community. We discovered that just 4.7 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home, which is actually below average.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: D

The last category we rated is long-term care, is this facility's weakest area. We awarded this facility a D in this area. In a long-term care setting, the primary objective is to keep patients healthy and safe. This is different than skilled nursing or short-term care where the goal is to rehabilitate patients. One of the criteria we considered in addition to nurse's aid hours is vaccines. Thankfully, this facility administered the pneumonia vaccination to 100 percent of its patients. Surprisingly, this nursing home was able to limit hospitalizations. With just 0.03 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, this nursing home has fewer hospitalizations than the average nursing home. Unfortunately, some of its other scores in this category weren't as favorable as these.
