Facility Inspections
While we graded this nursing home incredibly poorly overall, it received an impressive government inspection report this year. As a result, it received one of our highest grades in that area with an A-. Inspection grades weigh several factors, including deficiencies and substantiated complaints. You can learn more about each of these issues by obtaining copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. This place was hit with 3 deficiencies on its inspection report, but fortunately none were considered to be severe deficiencies. This tells you that CMS did not deem any of the deficiencies to pose an imminent risk to resident safety or health. A couple minor deficiencies aren't necessarily the end of the world.
Nurse Quality
Turning to the area of nursing care, this facility received a grade of just D in this category. Unfortunately, this ended up being one of its better grades. The nursing rating includes a number of subcategories. The most heavily weighted one is the amount of time nurses spend with residents. This facility provided just 3.2 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a very low total compared to most nursing homes. Lastly, we also looked at a few quality measures in computing our nursing scores. This facility was above average in two of the areas we considered, with good scores for minimizing its residents' pressure ulcers and major falls.
Long-term Care Quality
Sadly, this nursing home only received a D for its long-term care score, which is not a score to write home about. When nursing homes receive this kind of score in long-term care it is often a bad sign for resident care and it may mean that the nursing home is not as well-staffed with nurses and aids. On top of looking at the quantity of care provided by nurses and other staff, we analyzed the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. Candidly, we were a bit worried that this nursing home vaccinated a relatively low 55.701756 percent of its patients. To our surprise, this nursing home wasn't as bad as we expected at keeping its patients out of the hospital. While it had 2.34 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, its risk adjusted statistic was not bad since it had more complex patients.
Short-term Care Quality
The last area we analyzed was short-term care. This nursing home received a poor grade of F in that area. Our short-term care grade is typically employed to judge a facility's performance with rehabilitation. In order to have high-end rehabilitation services, nursing homes generally need to offer higher levels of skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, speech therapists and other types of therapists. Based on its poor grade in this category, we were not stunned to find that this nursing home provided far fewer registered nurse hours per patient than most other nursing homes. Finally, we looked at the number of residents who eventually returned home from this nursing home. This nursing home didn't fare well in this area. In fact, we found that just 29.2 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home. This figure was quite a bit off the national average.
