Edgewater at Waterman Village is an average-sized non-profit nursing home located in Mount Dora, Florida. This turns out to be an A+ facility, which is the very best grade. Short-term Care Quality
We also found that this facility excelled in our short-term care rating. We awarded them an impressive grade of A+ in this category. In computing our short-term care ratings, we scrutinize the facility's levels of skilled nursing services, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists occupational therapists and other licensed professionals. This area is typically a solid assessment of the nursing home's ability to rehabilitate patients. This nursing home provided more physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most facilities. This is what we like to find when assessing a nursing home in this category. The last statistic we assessed in this category is the percentage of patients who were able to return home from the nursing home. We found that it performed as well as just about any nursing home in Florida in this area with 66 percent of its residents returning home.
Long-term Care Quality
This high end nursing home also performed remarkably in the area of long-term care, where we awarded it a score of A+. Only a small group of nursing homes fared better in this category. Nursing homes that receive this type of score in long-term care typically provide consistent 24/7 care to ensure patients are kept in good health. In addition to providing very impressive levels of nurse staffing, this facility gave the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its patients. This statistic is also much better than the vast majority of nursing homes. Lastly, we looked at the facility's number of hospitalizations. With 1.8 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, this place is just about middle of the road in this area.
Facility Inspections
Racking up yet another strong category grade, this facility also excelled in inspections, where it received a grade of A. Few facilities performed better in this category. Our inspection scores are tied to items found on the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes that score well in this area typically have few deficiencies on those reports. Most importantly, these facilities should not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with endangerment of patients. While this place had a few minor dings on its report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are those labeled as categories G through L. This means the government inspectors didn't consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Nurse Quality
In the final area, this facility also was awarded an impressive nursing rating, with a grade of A. This wrapped up a first-rate profile. There are a variety of factors included in this grade. Many of the criteria reflect nurse staffing. This facility provided 4.7 hours of nursing care per patient on a daily basis, which is among the highest figures in the country. A significant portion of those hours were provided by registered nurses, which are one of the more skilled levels of nurses. We are really impressed by these statistics. On top of offering impressive levels of nursing care, this facility was also above average in several of the major quality-based metrics we looked at in this category. For example, it performed well in terms of minimizing its residents' pressure ulcers and major falls. These are generally reliable indicators of the quality of nursing care a nursing home provides.
