Facility Inspections
One of the reasons this ended up being a strong nursing home is that it earned a very impressive inspection grade. Inspections turned out to be its best category. In that category, we awarded this facility a grade of A+. Arguably the most significant factor we consider in determining our inspection scores is deficiencies. These deficiencies can be found on a facility's recent inspection reports. Places with better scores in this area most likely avoided the most severe deficiencies involving things like patient abuse. Amazingly, this was one of the few nursing homes in the country that had no deficiencies whatsoever on its inspection report. This is very impressive. A deficiency-free inspection report is what we look for.
Long-term Care Quality
The second most favorable category we gave this nursing home in any area came in the area of long-term care, where we gave it a grade of B-. With our long-term care category, we weigh the amount of care offered by a facility, as well as a series of quality metrics. One of the datapoints we considered on top of nurse's aid hours is vaccinations. Thankfully, this nursing home administered the pneumonia vaccination to 100 percent of its patients. This place was able to keep its residents out of the hospital. Indeed, it had only 0.01 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.

Nurse Quality
This facility's next best category was its nursing grade, where it received a grade of B-. While this didn't quite match its scores in some of the categories discussed above, this is still a decent score. In determining a nursing home's nursing score, we weigh the quantity of hours nurses are seeing residents and the level of skill of those nurses. This facility provided just 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a relatively low total compared to most other facilities. Lastly, we also assessed several nursing quality-based metrics. Although this place got docked a bit for its nursing hours, it excelled in some of these quality metrics. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it fared well in this subcategory. This is typically a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can many times be prevented by offering better nursing care, such as by employing a policy of moving a patient even once per day.
Short-term Care Quality
The next category we graded was short-term care. We awarded this nursing home a grade of B- in that area. Short-term care grades are important for people seeking rehabilitation. Rehabilitation typically utilizes more skilled nursing. Skilled nursing includes a wide range of nursing services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and respiratory therapists, as well as other forms of therapy. It does not appear that this nursing home submitted information on registered nurse or physical therapist staffing. Lastly, we looked at the percentage of patients that ultimately were able to return home from this nursing home. We found that 5.3 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home. This figure was actually well below the national average.
