Facility Inspections
One of the many reasons this turned out to be a quality nursing home is that it received an A+ inspection grade. This is simply as good as it gets in this critical category. Perhaps the most significant factor we consider in computing our inspection grades is deficiencies. These deficiencies can be found on a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes with higher grades in this category most likely dodged the more severe deficiencies involving things like patient abuse. Amazingly, this was one of the few nursing homes in the country that had no deficiencies whatsoever on its inspection report. This is very impressive. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
Contributing to this facility's list of accomplishments, it also was awarded a first-rate long-term care grade. We gave them an elite grade of A- in this category. Nursing homes that excel in this category typically are well-staffed and provide extensive hands on care to residents. Once we assessed the quantity of care provided by nurses, we then looked at the facility's vaccination statistics. This facility vaccinated 100 percent of its patients for pneumonia, which is an impressive figure. Pneumonia sadly can be a deadly condition for nursing home patients so we strongly prefer when a nursing home does not leave this to chance. Finally, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. It had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.

Short-term Care Quality
We also awarded this facility a middle of the road grade in the category of short-term care, where we awarded it a grade of B-. With our short-term care assessment, we seek to create a meaningful gauge for rehabilitation. In doing so, we analyze the facility's offerings of highly-skilled nursing services, including both registered nurses and physical therapy, as well as occupational therapy. Unfortunately, it doesn't appear that this facility submitted information about its staffing of registered nurses or physical therapists. Lastly, we looked at the number of residents who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. We found that 6 percent of this facility's residents returned home. At most facilities, closer to half of their residents are able to return home so this figure is below average.
Nurse Quality
The last category we scored is this facility's weakest area. However, even in its worst category we still gave it an acceptable grade of B- for our nursing category. Nursing grades are based largely on quantity of nursing care available. This facility provides only 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a somewhat alarming figure as it is well below average. Lastly, nursing grades also consider quality-based metrics, such as preventing major falls. Despite not having the most impressive total nursing hours, this facility performed admirably in the area of preventing major falls. This is often a reliable indicator that a facility has sufficient quality controls in place. Many falls can be avoided if a nursing home provides enough nurses aids to assist its residents.
