Facility Inspections
The primary reason this ended up being a decent nursing home is that it earned an excellent inspection grade. Its inspection grade was far better than its overall grade. In our inspections category, we gave it a grade of A+. Inspection scores weigh several factors included in a facility's inspection reports. One key criteria we look at is the number and severity of deficiencies. Nursing homes with better grades in this area typically have few of these severe deficiencies. While this nursing home had a few deficiencies on its inspection report, none of them were serious based on CMS' scale. We should point out that deficiency-free inspections are rare in the industry.
Long-term Care Quality
The next most favorable category we awarded this nursing home in any area came in the area of long-term care, where we gave it a grade of B-. If you are looking for anything other than rehabilitation, you should take a close look at long-term care ratings. In addition to looking at the amount of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This facility vaccinated 91.36 percent of its patients. This is a few points less than we were hoping for but still a decent figure. On a more positive note, this place was able to limit hospitalizations. It had only 0.02 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.

Short-term Care Quality
This facility's third best category is its short-term care score, where it was awarded a grade of C. In crafting these short-term care grades, we assess the facility's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses, speech therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. Our goal is to formulate a tool for sizing up the rehabilitation services of different facilities. Fortunately, it appear that this nursing home employs registered nurses. Not all facilities employs these skilled professionals. On the other hand, according to the information this nursing home provided, they do not appear to employ physical therapists. The last datapoint we assessed in this area is the number of residents that eventually returned home from the facility. We found that just 4.4 percent of this nursing home's residents returned home.
Nurse Quality
Turning to the final category, we awarded this facility a D in our nursing category. This is the nursing home's worst category grade. Unfortunately, this category pulled down the nursing home's overall profile to a certain degree. Nursing scores are based in large part on quality and quantity of nursing care. This facility provided just 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a very low total compared to most nursing homes. In addition to receiving below average scores for nursing hours, this facility was less impressive in some of the quality-based measures we looked at in computing our nursing ratings. We looked at the percent of residents sustaining pressure ulcers and found that this place was at approximately 1.5 times the national average in this metric.
