Facility Inspections
To pair with its relatively modest overall grade, we gave this nursing home an A for our inspections rating. This is far more impressive than the facility's overall score. These inspection scores take several factors into consideration, including deficiencies and federal fines. You can find more information about each of these factors by obtaining copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. While this place had a few deficiencies on its government inspection report, none of them were major deficiencies based on CMS' scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is always a good sign.
Long-term Care Quality
This facility also excelled in the area of long-term care. For this reason, we gave it a grade of A- in that area, which is one of our highest grades. Long-term care ratings of this caliber generally require both 24/7 care from nurses and aids, as well as quality routine healthcare services. One of the factors we considered in addition to nursing hours was vaccinations. This facility provided the pneumonia vaccination to 100 percent of its residents. Vaccination is a proven method to minimize negative health outcomes for the nursing home population. Finally, we looked at the facility's number of hospitalizations. Here we found that this facility had 2.18 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days.
Short-term Care Quality
Unfortunately, this nursing home's next highest score is short-term care. However, with a grade of D in this category, it still performed somewhat badly. With our short-term care category, we seek to create a meaningful gauge for rehabilitation services. In this process, we look at the facility's level of highly-skilled nursing services, including both registered nurses and physical therapy, as well as speech therapy. With its poor grade in this area, we were not surprised to discover that this nursing home provided substantially fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per patient than most facilities. Lastly, we assessed the number of patients who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. This was not a strength for this facility. We found that just 41.4 percent of this facility's patients returned home. At most nursing homes, around half of their patients are able to return home so this is well below average.
Nurse Quality
The last area we analyzed is nursing, which proved to be this nursing home's weakest area. It received a lowly F for this category, which is obviously a major disappointment. The nursing grade assesses many components, many of which are associated with levels of nurse staffing. This facility offered just 2.9 hours of nursing care per resident each day. This is well below average. To pair with its low totals in the area of nursing hours per patient, this nursing home also did not perform as well in the quality-based measures we looked at in calculating our nursing grades. We looked at the percentage of residents sustaining major falls and pressure ulcers. This place had more pressure ulcers and falls than the average nursing home.
