Although we didn't grade this facility favorably overall, we did give it an excellent grade in the area of inspections, where it earned a grade of A-. Our inspection grades weigh several factors found on a facility's inspection report. One key criteria we weigh heavily is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. You generally want to avoid nursing homes with too many severe deficiencies flagged. This particular nursing home received 4 deficiencies on its inspection report. Overall, this is still a solid inspection report, but we'd always recommend looking into any deficiencies you find troubling.

Surprisingly, this facility actually received an impressive nursing grade this year as well. We gave it a grade of B in this category. Our nursing grade is primarily associated with the facility's nurse staffing. This particular nursing home provided 3.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Lastly, we also looked at some quality-based measures in this category. This facility fared well in some of the quality measures we assessed. For example, in terms of the percentage of its residents suffering from pressure ulcers, this place performed better than the national average. This is generally an indicator that a nursing home has reliable quality controls in place. Pressure ulcers can often be prevented with better nursing care.

We also gave this nursing home a middle of the road score in the area of long-term care, where we awarded it a C. In crafting these long-term care ratings, we look at the nursing home's ability to maintain its permanent residents' health and quality of life. One of the criteria we considered after nurse's aid hours is vaccinations. We were a bit worried that this nursing home administered the pneumonia vaccination to just 70.55215 percent of its residents. On a more positive note, this place was able to limit hospitalizations. With only 1.7 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, this facility had less hospitalizations than many nursing homes.

Historical

The final area we scored is short-term care, in which this facility received a poor score in this area as well. Unfortunately, we gave it a lowly F for this area, which is obviously a major disappointment. Our short-term care scores are crucial for individuals needing rehabilitation. Rehabilitation usually requires higher levels of skilled nursing services. This means a wide range of nursing services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and occupational therapists, as well as other forms of therapy. Not surprisingly, we discovered that this place offers significantly less registered nurse and physical therapist hours per patient than the typical facility. The last datapoint we looked at in this category is the number of patients who were able to leave the facility and return to the community. We discovered that just 28.4 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home, which is well below average. The combination of these poor statistics doomed this nursing home's short-term care grade.
