Facility Inspections
While this nursing home's overall grade was decent, it really excelled in the category of inspections. In fact, we awarded it a grade of A for that category, which is one of our highest scores. Inspection scores are tied to items located in the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Places that score well in this category have few deficiencies on their reports. Most importantly, these facilities generally do not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with endangerment of patients. While this place had some deficiencies on its report, none of them were major deficiencies based on CMS' scale. The fact that none of the deficiencies were severe made us feel better about this inspection report.
Long-term Care Quality
This facility also was given a strong long-term care grade. In fact, we awarded them a B+ in this area, which happens to be one of our more favorable scores. Nursing homes that do well in this category tend to be well-staffed and provide extensive hands on care to residents. Once we looked at the amount of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we then looked at the facility's vaccination statistics. This facility vaccinated 100 percent of its patients for pneumonia, which is far higher than the majority of nursing homes. The last statistic we looked at is the nursing home's hospitalization rate. We found that this facility had 3.09 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. Although this admittedly wasn't as impressive as some of its other scores in this area, this number may be skewed for some facilities due to the preexisting medical conditions of patients.
Nurse Quality
Next, we looked at the nursing category where we awarded this nursing home a grade of B-, which is a decent grade. We assessed the levels of nurses employed by the facility, in addition to the number of hours those nurses spent with patients, in computing our rating in this area. This nursing home averages 3.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Lastly, our nursing grades also factor in quality-based measures, such as preventing major falls. This facility performed admirably in this datapoint. Avoiding major falls is typically a reliable indicator that a facility has quality controls in place. Some falls can be prevented if a nursing home provides enough nurses aids to assist its residents.
Short-term Care Quality
The last category we looked at is short-term care, which proved to be this nursing home's worst area. Sadly, it received an F in this area, which is certainly very disappointing. Our short-term care ratings are arguably more critical for individuals in need of rehabilitation services. Rehabilitation typically requires more highly-skilled nursing services. This means not only nursing, but also physical and speech therapy, as well as other variations of therapy. It looks like this facility was subpar in many staffing areas we focus on. The facility provided fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most other nursing homes. Finally, we considered the percentage of residents that eventually returned home from this facility. This facility didn't fare well here either. In fact, we found that just 34.6 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home.
