Facility Inspections
In addition to being a strong nursing home overall, it also received A+ inspections recently. Its inspections were virtually perfect. Our inspection scores are tied to several items found on the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes that score well in this area typically have few deficiencies on those reports. Most importantly, these facilities generally do not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with risks to patient safety. We weren't able to locate deficiency counts for this nursing home. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
This top-shelf nursing home also was superb in the category of long-term care, where it received a grade of A+. Very few facilities performed better in this category. When nursing homes receive a score in this range in long-term care it generally means it has plenty of staff and is a quality place to live on a permanent basis. In addition to looking at the amount of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we looked at the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This nursing home gave the vaccine to 100 percent of its residents. Vaccines are critical to keeping patients healthy. The last statistic we assessed is the facility's hospitalization rate. We found that this facility had 3.4 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. Although this wasn't as strong as some of its other scores in this category, this statistic may be skewed for some nursing homes based on the medical complexity of residents.
Short-term Care Quality
Turning to the third category, this nursing home also received a grade of B for its short-term care rating. This is an above average grade in this area. In our short-term care rating, we endeavor to create a valuable measure for rehabilitation services. In doing so, we assess a nursing home's scope of skilled nursing services, including both registered nurses and physical therapy, as well as speech therapy. This nursing home provides a decent amount of services from physical therapists and registered nurses based on our assessment. The final metric we assessed in this category is the percentage of patients who ultimately returned home from the facility. It performed better than most facilities in this area with 52.5 percent of its residents returning home. For most facilities, fewer than half of their short-term residents are able to return home.
Nurse Quality
The next area we looked at is nursing. This facility was awarded a better than average nursing score in our assessment, with a grade of C. Even though this is not nearly as strong as a few of its other grades, this is nevertheless an acceptable score in this category. There are a host of subcategories within this area. Many of these criteria relate to staffing levels. This facility provided 3.5 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also considered some quality-based metrics. This nursing home fared well in a few of the quality-based metrics we assessed. By way of illustration, in terms of the number of its patients suffering from pressure ulcers, this place outpaced the national average. This is often a reliable indicator that a nursing home has sufficient quality controls in place. Pressure ulcers can typically be avoided with better nursing care.
