Facility Inspections
While this facility's overall grade was as bad as it gets, it actually fared well in the area of inspections. In fact, we awarded it a B+ for that category, which is one of our better scores. Inspection ratings are based on several pieces of information found on the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Deficiencies are an important item to look for on these reports. You should especially avoid nursing homes that have severe deficiencies associated with endangerment of patients. This facility was assessed 2 deficiencies on its inspection report, but fortunately none of the deficiencies were considered to be severe. This tells you that the inspectors didn't deem any of the deficiencies to pose an imminent threat to resident health or safety. A few minor deficiencies are not necessarily the end of the world.
Short-term Care Quality
As it turns out, this nursing home only earned a grade of D for its short-term care score, which was actually one of its more respectable category grades. In the area of short-term care, we strive to qualify indicators of a nursing home's rehabilitation services. We assess the nursing home's skilled nursing services, such as the ones performed by registered nurses and physical therapists. Unfortunately, we found that this nursing home provided fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most other facilities. Finally, we looked at the number of patients who ultimately were able to return home from this facility. This nursing home didn't fare well here either. In fact, we found that just 41.9 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home. This figure was well off the national average.
Nurse Quality
We gave this facility a grade of just D for our nursing rating. In computing a nursing home's nursing rating, we consider the quantity of hours nurses commit to patients and the level of skill of the nurses. This nursing home provides 2.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a much lower figure than we are used to seeing. In addition to receiving below average marks for total nursing hours, this nursing home was a bit less impressive in some of the quality-based metrics we looked at in computing our nursing scores. We looked at the percent of residents experiencing pressure ulcers and found this place was at approximately 1.5 times the national average in this metric. This is a bad sign when you consider that many pressure ulcers are preventable with better nursing care. This statistic really dragged down this facility's nursing rating significantly.
Long-term Care Quality
Moving on to our fourth category, this facility really did not perform very well in this area either. With a rock bottom grade of F in long-term care, this is about as terrible as it gets. For residents looking for a permanent residence as opposed to skilled nursing, long-term care grades are an important measure. Once we assessed the volume of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we then analyzed the facility's vaccination statistics. We were pleased to learn that this nursing home vaccinated 98.1685 percent of its patients against pneumonia. To our surprise, this place was able to keep its residents out of the hospital. It had just 0.83 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days. Sadly, some of its other scores in the category weren't as favorable as these.
