An A+ in this area is one of the best complements we can offer a nursing home. Our inspection scores account for a host of factors included in a facility's inspection reports. One key criteria we look at is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. Facilities with better scores in this area generally have few severe deficiencies. Although this facility had a few deficiencies on its government inspection report, none of them were severe based on CMS' scale. A few minor dings aren't the end of the world.

In determining our short-term care grades, we look at the facility's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses, respiratory therapists, physical therapists and other types of therapists. The purpose is to formulate a scale for sizing up the rehabilitation services of nursing homes. Fortunately, it appear that this facility employs registered nurses. Not all facilities employs these types of nurses. On the other hand, based on the data this nursing home provided, they do not appear to employ physical therapists. The last measure we assessed in this area is the percentage of patients who were able to leave the facility and return to the community. We discovered that 5.9 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home.

Among its many impressive grades, this facility received an excellent nursing grade. In fact, we gave it a grade of A- in that category. Our nursing grade weighs quite a few factors, most of which are associated with nursing hours. This particular nursing home provided 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also assessed several nursing quality-based metrics and this facility excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any facility the country in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can many times be avoided by offering better nursing care, such as by having a system of moving patients at least once a day.

The next category we scored is long-term care. This facility was given a very good long-term care grade this year, with a grade of C. Even though this was not quite as strong as some of its other grades, this remains an acceptable rating for that area. In computing our long-term care ratings, we scrutinize the assistance with daily living offered to the nursing home's residents. On top of assessing the volume of care provided by aids and other staff, we also looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. Thankfully, this facility gave the vaccine to 100 percent of its residents, which is a very respectable total. Lastly, this facility was also able to limit hospitalizations. In fact, it had only 0.01 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.
