Facility Inspections

Grade: A

The main reason this ended up being a decent nursing home is that it received an excellent inspection grade. In fact, its inspection grade was far better than its overall grade. In the inspections category, we gave it an A. Perhaps the most significant factor we look at in calculating our inspection grades is deficiencies. Deficiencies can be found on a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Facilities with better scores in this area typically dodged the most severe deficiencies involving patient abuse or death. Although this place had a few deficiencies on its report, none were major deficiencies based on CMS' scale. A few relatively minor dings are not necessarily the end of the world.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: B

This nursing home also was given a positive score in our long-term care category. We gave this facility a better than average grade of B in that category. Long-term care ratings in this range generally require both 24/7 care from nurses and aids, as well as quality routine healthcare services. Once we looked at the amount of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we next considered the nursing home's vaccination statistics. This nursing home vaccinated 98.89706 percent of its patients for pneumonia, which is significantly higher than the majority of nursing homes. Lastly, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. While it had 1.93 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, its risk adjusted score was better than most facilities since it had some more complex patients.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: B-minus

This facilities next most favorable category is short-term care. We awarded it a grade of B- in this category. This is essentially a middle of the pack grade in this area. In our short-term care category, we strive to forge a valuable barometer for rehabilitation. In doing so, we analyze a facility's level of skilled nursing services, including both registered nurses and physical therapy, as well as occupational therapy. We were pleased to find that this nursing home employs both registered nurses and physical therapists. The same can't be said for all nursing homes. The final measure we looked at in this category is the number of residents who were able to leave the facility and return to the community. We found that it was above average in this area with 52.7 percent of its residents returning home.

Nurse Quality

Grade: D

The next area we looked at was nursing, is this nursing home's weakest category. We gave this nursing home a grade of D in this area. This really was one of the couple of weak links in an otherwise impressive report card. Our nursing score analyzes quite a few factors, many of which are tied to nursing hours. This facility provided 3.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is below the national average. To go along with its subpar totals in the area of nursing hours per patient, this place also didn't fare as well in the quality-based measures we looked at in determining our nursing ratings. We looked at the percent of patients sustaining pressure ulcers and major falls. This place had more falls and pressure ulcers than the average facility. This may be a bad sign when you consider that many bed sores and falls are preventable with better nursing care. Unfortunately, these statistics hurt this nursing home's nursing grade quite a bit.
