In a long-term care setting, the primary goal is to maintain residents' quality of life and keep them safe. Once we looked at the volume of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we then looked at the nursing home's vaccination record. We were optimistic to find that this nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its residents for pneumonia. This facility keeps its residents out of the hospital. Indeed, it had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.
