Long-term Care Quality
This nursing home fared well in our long-term care category. In fact, we awarded it an A- for that category. Long-term care ratings in this range generally require both 24/7 care from nurses and aids, as well as quality routine medical care. In addition to considering the volume of care provided by aids and other staff, we analyzed the percentage of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This facility administered the vaccine to 100 percent of its residents, which is very impressive. Pneumonia sadly can be a life threatening illness for nursing home residents so we strongly prefer when a facility doesn't roll the dice on this issue. Clearly, this nursing home is doing something right in this area as it also excelled at keeping its residents out of the hospital. In fact, it had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low number.
Facility Inspections
This nursing home's inspection grade also was better than its overall grade. Due to a quality inspection report this year, it received one of our better grades in that area with a grade of B. These inspection ratings take several factors into consideration, including deficiencies and federal fines. You can find more information about each of these factors by reviewing copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. While this facility had some deficiencies on its inspection report, none were serious based on CMS' scale. A couple of minor deficiencies should not stop you from considering a nursing home.

Short-term Care Quality
The next best category we gave this nursing home in any category came in the category of short-term care, where we gave it a C. In determining our short-term care grades, we look at the nursing home's levels of highly skilled nursing services, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists occupational therapists and other highly trained professionals. This grade is frequently a fair assessment of the facility's ability to rehabilitate patients. In this facility's case, we were surprised to learn that it actually provides less registered nurse and physical therapist hours per resident than the average facility. The hope is that this does not adversely impact the quality of care. Finally, we assessed the number of residents who were able to return to the community from this facility. We found that 5.1 percent of this facility's residents returned home. At most facilities, closer to half of their patients are able to return home so this figure is below average.
Nurse Quality
Turning to our last area, this facility really didn't perform well. With an abysmal grade of F in nursing, this is its worst grade. Our nursing score looks at the facility's nurse staffing levels. We factor in both the levels of skill of those nurses and the number of hours spent with patients. With a meager 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident on a daily basis, this nursing home's nurse staffing levels were significantly below average. On top of its below average nursing hour totals, this nursing home also received suboptimal scores in many of the quality-based metrics we considered in determining our nursing scores. We found that more of this nursing home's residents sustained falls leading to serious injury.
