Facility Inspections

Grade: A

In addition to performing well in its overall grade, this facility received a nearly flawless inspection report. As a result, we gave it one of our best scores in this category with an A. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in determining our inspection ratings. One critical factor is deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of these deficiencies is usually more meaningful than the quantity of deficiencies, as some can be relatively minor. This nursing home received 2 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none of the deficiencies were considered to be severe. This indicates that the government inspectors didn't deem any of the deficiencies to cause an imminent risk to patient safety or health. The fact that the deficiencies were relatively minor made us feel better about this inspection report.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: A

Adding to its top-shelf resume, this facility also received an excellent short-term care grade, with a score of A. In the category of short-term care, we endeavor to qualify measures of a nursing home's rehabilitation. We assess the nursing home's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses and physical, occupational and other therapists. Fortunately, it appear that this nursing home has registered nurses on staff. Not every nursing home employs these skilled professionals. On the other hand, based on the information this nursing home provided, they do not appear to employ physical therapists. Finally, we assessed the number of patients who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. We found that 7.3 percent of this facility's residents returned home.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: B-plus

The third category we assessed is long-term care. This facility was given a very positive long-term care score, with a grade of B+ in this category. When nursing homes receive a grade in this range in long-term care it typically means it's well-staffed and is a quality place to reside on a permanent basis. In addition to assessing the quantity of care provided by nurses and other staff, we also looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This facility administered the vaccine to 100 percent of its patients, which is far higher than most nursing homes. Clearly, this facility is doing something right in this area as it was able to keep its residents out of the hospital. It had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.

Nurse Quality

Grade: B

Turning to our fourth area, this nursing home received a high-end nursing grade. Even though this is not nearly as good as some of its other grades, this is nevertheless one of our better scores a facility can receive. There are numerous criteria included in this category. Many of the data points are tied to levels of nurse staffing. This nursing home provides 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, our nursing grades also factor in quality-based assessments, such as avoiding major falls. This place performed well in this area. Avoiding major falls is typically a good indicator that a facility has reliable quality controls in place. Major falls can typically be avoided if more nurses aids and better safety protocols are in place.
