We want to draw your attention to the fact that this nursing home outperformed its overall score in the area of inspections. In fact, it received a nearly flawless inspection report this year. As a result, we gave it one of our highest scores in that category with an A. Our inspection ratings account for several factors included in a facility's inspection reports. One of the most important criteria we consider is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. Places with higher scores in this category usually have very few severe deficiencies. While this nursing home had a few deficiencies on its government inspection report, none were severe based on CMS' deficiency scale. A couple of minor deficiencies should not lead you to cross a nursing home off your list.

This nursing home's second best category is long-term care. We gave it a B- in this area. This is basically a slightly below average score in this area. In a long-term care setting, the primary goal is to keep patients healthy and safe. This is different than skilled nursing or short-term care where the goal is to rehabilitate residents. On top of considering the amount of care provided by aids and other staff, we analyzed the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. Thankfully, this nursing home provided the vaccine to 100 percent of its residents, which is a very solid datapoint. Finally, this facility was also able to limit hospitalizations. It had only 0.01 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.

As it turns out, this nursing home only received a D for its short-term care score, which is not one of our better scores. Our short-term care grade is typically employed to judge a facility's performance with rehabilitation To have highly graded rehabilitation services, facilities generally must provide higher levels of skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, respiratory therapists and other licensed professionals. Based on its weak rating in this category, we were not shocked to learn this facility provides far fewer registered nurse and physical therapist hours per patient than most nursing homes. Lastly, we looked at the percentage of patients who were able to return to the community from this facility. This wasn't a strength for this facility. We found that just 0 percent of this nursing home's patients returned home. At most nursing homes, around half of their residents are able to return home so this is well below average.

This facility's least impressive category is nursing, which is the final area we looked at. Unfortunately, we gave it an F for this category. Even with multiple acceptable grades in other categories, this score is still disappointing so we felt obligated to make a note of it. The nursing grade assesses a handful of components, but the most important consideration is the quantity of nurse hours per patient per week. This facility provided only 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident each day. On top of receiving below average marks for nursing hours, this place was less impressive in some of the quality-based metrics we looked at in calculating our nursing scores. We looked at the percentage of patients suffering pressure ulcers and found that this nursing home was at approximately 150 percent of the national average in this statistic. This is likely a bad sign when you consider that so many bed sores are preventable with better nursing care. This statistic pulled down this facility's nursing grade significantly.
