Facility Inspections

Grade: A

This facility received a solid overall grade as described above, but we really wanted to point out its nearly flawless health inspection reports in recent years. We gave them an A in this category. Perhaps the most significant factor we look at in determining our inspection grades is deficiencies. These deficiencies are found on a facility's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes with better scores in this category typically dodged the most severe deficiencies involving patient abuse or death. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Based on this, we still had a generally positive view of this facility's recent inspections.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: B

This facility also received a strong score in our long-term care category. We awarded this facility an above average grade of B in that area. For patients seeking a permanent place to live as opposed to skilled nursing, long-term care grades are an important measure. On top of considering the volume of care provided by nurses and other staff, we also looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This facility provided the vaccine to 72.234276 percent of its patients. This is slightly less than we anticipated. Although its vaccination rate was a bit lower than we had hoped, this nursing home was able to limit hospitalizations. In fact, it had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: C

This facility's next best area is its short-term care score, where it was given a C. In our short-term care score, we attempt to forge a sound measure for rehabilitation. In doing so, we look at the facility's level of skilled nursing services, including both registered nurses and physical therapy, as well as occupational therapy. In this nursing home's case, we were surprised to learn that it actually provides less registered nurse and physical therapist hours per resident than the typical facility. The last item we looked at in this area is the percentage of patients who were able to leave the nursing home and return home. We discovered that just 5.5 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home, which is below average.

Nurse Quality

Grade: D

Switching gears to the final category, we gave this facility a D for nursing. This was the nursing home's worst category score. In calculating a facility's nursing grade, we weigh the amount of time nurses are with patients as well as the level of skill of the nurses. With only 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident each day, this place's nurse staffing levels were far below average. Finally, we also looked at some nursing quality measures in determining our nursing scores. This nursing home performed well in the area of avoiding pressure ulcers and major falls. Many consider these statistics to be good indicators of the quality of nursing care.
