Facility Inspections
The primary reason this ended up being a decent nursing home is that it earned an elite inspection score. In fact, its inspection grade was far better than its overall grade. In our inspections category, we gave it an A. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in determining these inspection ratings. One of those factors is deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of these deficiencies is arguably more important than the number of deficiencies, as some of these can be relatively minor. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Based on this, we still had favorable view of this nursing home's recent inspections.
Long-term Care Quality
In addition, we also wanted to point out that this nursing home received favorable long-term care marks in this assessment. We awarded them one of our higher grades in this category, with a grade of B. This proved to be the nursing home's second highest grade. When nursing homes receive a score in this range in long-term care it generally means it has plenty of staff and is a quality place to live on a permanent basis. After considering the amount of care provided by nurses and other staff, we then analyzed the nursing home's vaccination statistics. This facility vaccinated 100 percent of its residents for pneumonia, which is more than the vast majority of nursing homes. Clearly, this facility is doing something right in this area as it also excelled at keeping its patients out of the hospital. Indeed, it had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.

Short-term Care Quality
Unfortunately, this nursing home's next highest category is short-term care. Nevertheless, with a D in this category, it still fared somewhat poorly. Our short-term care ratings are based in part on the facility's quantity of highly-skilled highly skilled professionals. This includes a broad spectrum of services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and occupational therapists, in addition to other types of therapy. With a score in this range in this category, we were not surprised to find that this nursing home was below average in two of the key staffing areas we assess. In fact, it offered significantly fewer registered nurse and physical therapist hours per resident than most other facilities. Lastly, we considered the percentage of residents that ultimately were able to return home from this nursing home. This nursing home didn't fare well here either. In fact, we found that just 4.4 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home. This figure was quite a bit off the national average.
Nurse Quality
The next area we graded was nursing, which turned out to be this nursing home's weakest area. We awarded this nursing home a D in that area. Nursing ratings are based in large part on quantity of nursing care available. This place averaged only 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident daily. This is a very low total compared to most nursing homes. On top of ranking below average in nursing hours per resident, this nursing home also had poor scores in the quality-based measures we looked at in determining our nursing scores. We looked at the percent of patients experiencing pressure ulcers and major falls. This facility was at about 150 percent of the national average in both of these statistics. This is a bad sign when you consider that many bed sores and falls are believed to be preventable with better nursing care. These statistics helped pull down this nursing home's nursing grade significantly.
